you're the child being left behind....sorry...:p
My poor teacher friends!!!!!
(and I agree, standardized tests can kiss my ass as well. I don't think there's a teacher in MA who a agrees with MCAS-they all hate it if it's any consolation).
It certainly is. I was e-mailing a teacher friend of mine today and he has the joy of covering today, Thursday, and Monday.
I do think they all hate the MCAS.
they can't teach properly because of it. plus the kids freak out! my friend teaches 4th grade (little 9-10 year olds!) and the kids get so stressed they start puking! literally!
well we can all thank GW is his NCLB policy that has absolutely no foundation in education, economics, or sociology.
i'm glad im not the only one who hates it.

Anyway, I don't want to debate the issue because overall I agree that the NCLB Act as it's realized and implemented is simply not working. There are certain provisions that are great in theory but unfortunately don't translate through practical application..
In the case you guys are bored to death, here is some basic shit I wrote recently for a class regarding The No Child Left Behind Act:
The purpose of No Child Left Behind Act is to ensure academic equality and bridge the educational achievement gap between students in elementary and secondary schools. The law was signed by George W. Bush in January of 2002. This law revised the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965, and it aims to improve annual test scores in reading and math in grades three through eight. The key provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act are outlined below:
Accountability for Results: All states are required to implement accountability measures across all public schools and students. Within twelve years, all students must reach proficiency standards in mathematics and reading as measured by annual testing of students in grades three through eight. Furthermore, funds will be made available for schools that test poorly, but they must improve and make adequate yearly progress (AYP), or in time they may be forced to restructure and/or close.
State and Local Flexibility: The NCLB Act offers schools flexibility with allocated education funds as long as accountability results are met. This enables states and districts to have more control and make decisions with federal funds for relevant goals. This flexibility allows schools to focus and allocate federal funds and programs for their specific needs.
Resources Focused on Proven Educational Methods: Scientifically based programs and strategies are to be implemented to ensure that by the third grade every child can read.
Improving Teacher Quality: Under federal law, highly qualified teachers of core academic subjects must possess a bachelor’s degree, must be state certified, and competency in the core subject taught must be demonstrated.
Choices and Options for Parents: Parents are encouraged to be involved and are given the option to send their child or children to other schools within the district if they are currently attending a “failing” school, as identified by law.

I hope to be a teacher in TX soon. I am not looking forward to the TAKS. :(
