MANNY RAMIREZ
"Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus says the Red Sox, Pirates and Marlins have agreed to a three-team Manny Ramirez deal, pending Ramirez waiving his no-trade clause and league approval.

Carroll, not normally one of our preferred sources, has the Red Sox getting Jason Bay and John Grabow; the Marlins acquiring Ramirez, cash and a prospect from the Red Sox and the Pirates picking up Jeremy Hermida, two prospects from the Marlins and one from Boston.

"

im fine with Bay :)

  • I was pretty convinced this was going to happen, until I saw Manny was in the lineup tonight. usually you sit a guy if a deal is imminent

    :D thanks

although if Manny does come to the Marlins, we should see some great clips of his defensive skills ;)

as a Marlins fan, I'm really not that excited about getting him. it'll have to grow on me. and yes, I do like Ramirez.

he's a very good lefty, out of the pen. We should move all the Manny talk into one thread. i recommend using my thread from last october, titled:

Bay has been criminally overrated this year IMO.

they must have really been looking to unload Manny then, right? Perhaps when he shoved that older guy, that was the last straw or what have you.

I don't think he will be any happier playing in South Florida.

let's just say that if the deal goes down, Marlins fans shouldnt get too attached to him. he'll jumped ship for a big payday.

    oh without a doubt
but I mean to say why else would the Sox be willing to unload him, other than his big mouth kvetching every 5 minutes? To unload his salary? It sounds like they got theoretically 'good' players, but not ones that compare to Manny's hitting.

I guess they had enough of the whole "Manny being Manny" crap. He helped them win two titles, so he became expendable.

you'd think. Sadly, that was swept under the rug. The last straw was when he sat out Game 1 of the Yankees series.

We Have A Deal But …

    by Will Carroll

The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars, and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal involving these teams. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-and-5 rights, and no-trade clause, and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.

So here’s what Pee Wee Herman would call the “big but”: the teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It’s expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects, while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There’s still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (Red Sox), and cash (likely covering Ramirez’s remaining salary)

Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two Marlins, one Red Sox)

Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

There is still potential for this to fall apart over the prospects, but things appear closer now than ever before.
Canada, says Ament, holds a special place in the band's heart because of its international policies and its decision to stay out of the war in Iraq.

    MANNY RAMIREZ
"ESPN's Peter Gammons believes the three-team Manny Ramirez talks will stretch into Thursday and that a deal is still unlikely to be completed. It's been 40 minutes now and no one has joined Will Carroll in saying that the deal is done or even all that close to being done. Skepticism is still warranted.

    "

    Source: ESPN. com

Put it this way, I'm not sold that this trade is agreed upon. Three team deals are very diffucult to pull of due to all the pieces in the trade constantly moving around and GM's pulling for different pieces or extra pieces before the trade is complete. In my general and most honest opinion, I do not believe that this trade is complete at this very moment and it's currently 10:42 PM Eastern time.

Now does that mean that this deal won't get done before the deadline? That I am not so sure of. If it does get done and the names that were mentioned in the previous bulletin were all the players that will be involved in the trade, I feel like the Red Sox truly dealt Manny just to deal him. I do not feel that the Red Sox are getting equal value here.

The only thing that is making me believe that a deal will get done and that the Red Sox truly are making every effort to deal Ramirez would be the comments that Manny made today:

""The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me. During my years here, I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them. The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy. I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price, and I don't have peace here.

    "

It's safe to say that he has made it very apparent that he no longer wants to play in Boston. Ramirez made those comments before today's game to ESPN Deportes and right away he made the impact on everyone that he really wanted out. Every professional sports writer within a thousand miles of Boston is saying the same thing, "a deal is unlikely". If a deal really is unlikely then you have to really wonder how the chemistry in the clubhouse is going to be like if he does stay.

His comments make him come off as a really self-centered baseball player. Saying that the Red Sox don't deserve a player like him makes him seem like he thinks he is above the team. That might not rub off well on some prideful guys in that Boston clubhouse.

  • I heard a Boston beatwriter on the local ESPN radio station saying the rest of the team may revolt if manny is traded. None of them like him outside of Ortiz, but they know what he means to the team

  • it's impossible to get equal value when dealing a player like this. Especially when he's a world renowned douchebag
