I ask them what country they're in. When they say "Australia", I tell them that if that's the case then why are they going around performing an American tradition. I then slam the door in their innocent little faces.

Only joking. I just don't answer the door :D
  • I hope when we move, they don't do trick or treating there. It IS American and I don't like that the kids have kinda taken it on here. Why people let their kids walk the streets, knocking on STRANGERS doors asking STRANGERS to give them lollies etc; is beyond me???!!!
We get flooded with trick or treaters every year here......AND.....I've lost the packets of lollies I bought for them  I hid them from my kids and can't remember where
I'm thinking I'll go and buy a few packets of Laxettes instead ;)

lol halloween did not originate in America. :p And other countries celebrate it too! ;)

But Aussie kids have discovered it from the American TV shows and I'd say it's bigger in America that anywhere else? Just a guess?

It isnt an American holiday though. Came from Samhain. The Irish brought it over in the 19th century. Trick or treating originated with the Druids (not dangerous if they don't go to strangers house--I think its weird you don't know your neighbors?? Most people dont send their kids to houses they don't know)

Here is an intersesting read about it :)

Fortunately we live in a TINY little town out in the middle of the bush, where everyone knows EVERYONE :) And when the kids do it here, there's always a parent with the groupAND they know the person who's door they're knocking on.
I'm just talking about stories I've heard of kids up in the city that do it - where, sadly, most of them don't know their neighbors, let alone anyone else. On one hand....the schools are full on teaching kids about 'Stranger Danger' (which includes NOT taking lollies etc; from strangers) and then once a year, parents are happy to let their kids do this?

I'm only talking from an Aussie point of view - what happens here :)
I also know it didn't originate in America....but....once again, from an Aussies point of view......we've hooked onto it from all of the American shows we have on out TV here - that are all Halloween crazy this time of year :)

Understand, I'm not blaming America, or anyone else.....just saying it's a relatively new craze here in Autralia (that we've adopted from the U.S) and there's no tradition involved with it here.....it's just a huge commercial thing.

Anyway, this isn't a Halloween thread; what's Ozjammer doing for his birthday? :)
