Calzaghe Vs Hopkins

Big fight in Vegas on Saturday.

Any thoughts on how it's gonna go?

Been to see Joe a number of times over the years, and I think he might have a bit too much hand & foot speed for Hopkins.
Hopkins is a spoiler, and if he can draw Joe into a war then he could well get the decision.
But if Joe fights smart he should come out on top.

It's a tough one to call. Very tough.
I'll go with Joe's youth advantage, though I can't see either fighter getting knocked out. I also can't imagine a chess game, so I expect fireworks.
I just wish I had a satellite dish here, or that there was a bar somwhere that will show it, but there's fuck-all out here.

How old is Hopkins? 43? He's a tough old pro, but Joe should win this comfortably, on points at least.

Hopkins will make it a good fight, but Joe is too good and too young (well, young by Hopkins standards!).

Reckon it'll be Calzaghe on points, or else a draw. Expect a similar if not more convincing victory than the Kessler fight.

Don't really know much about Hopkins though.......still, at his age he has to look for a knock-out and that'll likely be a tactic to go against him.

    Anyone watch the fight?

Not a classic by any means, not many Hopkins fights are! He did his best to rough Joe up & put him out of his stride. It workd well for 1st 3 or 4 rounds, but then Joe out-worked him for the remainder of the bout.

Looked dodgy after Joe was knocked down in round 1. But maybe that was the best thing that could happen, get him more focused.

I had Joe ahead by 3 or 4 rounds at the end, but was still doubting the Vegas judges would give him the nod.
Think Joe's higher work rate & the fact he was the only one trying to come forward edged it in his favour.

didn't see the fight, but i know Hopkins will never admit he lost. Although i heard the entire press at ringside had hopkins winning the bout. Hopkins said, " I thought I took him to school"

Would've been harsh on boxing had Hopkins been given the decision. He just came to spoil, hold, use his head, feign injury, waste time, anything to put Calzaghe out of his stride.
It's nothing new, Hopkins has made a career out of it. It's just not great viewing. There's no denying he's a boxing great, certainly one of the finest of the modern era. He's just not all that exciting to watch.
I don't blame him. He made it a close fight doing what he does best, and on another night may well have got the win.

Calzaghe did all the attacking, threw three times as many punches, landing twice as many and deserved victory in my opinion.

On Setanta over here in the UK they said that 75% of the ringside press had it in Calzaghe's favour.

Biggest downside of the night was Tom Jones singing the Welsh national anthem, and not really knowing all of the words!!!!

Hopkins needs to retire. He's just ruining his "legacy" by making his W-L record worse.

    Agreed.

I think Calzaghe should call it a day now too.
Nothing out there for him now.
Pavlik seems to be tied up for the next 12 months, so rules him out.
Taking on Roy Jones Jr is just putting himself in a no win situation.
He wins, everybody says "RJJ is finshed". He loses and it's all "see, he was never any good after all" !! Same goes for Tarver.

Although, all that being said, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to see the legend RJJ take on Joe at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff!

Jones Jr ain't what he was, Tarver took him and yet lost to Hopkins so Calzaghe may as well cash in, should'nt be his toughest fight by a stretch.

Jones Jr at his peak woulda been another matter entirely!
