Anyone ever had one? I have one tomorrow, and though I'm ok with the blood taking, I'm actually more nervous about drinking that disgusting sweet drink! (I read it makes many people vomit!) And, what do you do for the 3 hours you're sitting there? I'll have to go buy a new book or...something.

come to find out today via webmd, I should have been eating a high carb diet to get accurate results! and apparently, birth control pills screw up the results...my doctor didn't give me any info! I'll be pissed if I go through all that poking at 7 am and my results are screwed up!

I had the 1 hour test when I was pregnant (it's standard) and the sweet drink that I had just tasted like orange soda and it wasn't disgusting....or, it wasn't any more disgusting than orange soda usually is. ;) I've heard there is a lemon-lime flavored one that people usually don't like, though. There was a tv in the room, so I just sat and read a magazine and watched that to occupy my time. Take a novel, a magazine and your ipod.

Why don't you call them up to check, so you won't have to go through it if the results won't be accurate.

If they say its okay, why not bring your ipod as well as a book.

My wife had to take a Diabetes test during her pregnancy. Similar thing - drink the orange drink, wait an hour, more blood drawn. She said the drink didn't taste bad (tasted like McDonalds orange drink all the 4 year olds get at thier Birthday parties), but the hardest part was finishing the drink in the allotted time.

I called the lab but they wouldn't answer the questions, they said I had to discuss it with my doctor. my doctor doesn't really know (it's my primary care doctor- I asked her to schedule the test). She's young and said she's never ordered a glucose tolerance test before. I guess it'll be up to the specialist I'm sending it to read the results keeping in mind I'm on bcp...as for the carbs, well I had a couple glasses of port on saturday and a lot of ice cream sunday, so I'm hoping that huge sugar rush will cover it!

hmmmmmmm.....supposedly i get my glucose checked/tested every time i go for bloodwork b/c diabetes runs in my family, but i've never had to drink anything, nor wait around. just the usual fasting for 10 hours earlier? gues i've not gotten a 'glucose tolerance test'...and they simply check my levels? interesting....

there are different glucose tests. there's one that they just draw blood then and there and test it. this is more to check for how quickly it's dispersed in the blood, and actually referred to as an "oral glucose tolerance test." they do it to test for gestational diabetes, PCOS w/IR (my case), and type II diabetes.

I had it while pregnant as well. I drank it at home and then went in to the office. I really liked the orange drink....thought it was rather yummy. :)

yeah the pregnant one is 1 hour, I'm getting the honor of 3 hours! theory being that fasting level will be too low, then it will spike higher than normal, then it be too low again.

ok that's good to hear. webmd said many people cannot handle the sweet drink and vomit. since I'm not a fan of sweet things, this concerned me.

well my family history IS for type II diabetes, but i guess they simply test the glucose levels and don't take it further with the test you're taking unless i exhibit some sort of warning signs....or at least i hope.....:)

    good luck!

I know some pregnant ladies have trouble tolerating the flavor of *any* of them, but the kind that I had really didn't taste any different/stronger/sweeter than your average orange soda.

I've been picturing it being really thick for some reason, like syrup.

If it makes that many people sick you'd think whoever concocts these things would come up with something better.

nah, it's thin like a regular drink and mine was fizzy.

You know, I've heard some OB-GYN's skip the drink and just have their patients eat a candy bar. Sounds like fun, but....that just seems wrong to me...lol.

honestly, lately I can't stand the thought of eating a candy bar! I saw a snickers commercial over the weekend and was literally grossed out! I've never been a fan of those things for most of my life, but I was actually GROSSED OUT by watching people on TV eating a snickers! AND saturday night, my friend had her 30th birthday party as a "dessert party." the whole dining room table was filled with cakes and other sweets, and there was chocolate fondue in the kitchen. the smell of the sugar was really bothering me! I ate almost the whole plate of strawberries that were supposed to go in the fondue instead!
  • ugh they wouldn't give me the test I was expecting. they only took a base and a low, and the low was taken after only two hours.

my base was normal, and I just have this feeling my low will be too. I should be happy, as it would mean I'm not at risk for diabetes. but there is still something wrong with me, and now I don't know what it is...

it doesn't make sense, I fit ALL the symptoms of pcos. even hard to describe feelings are consistent.

that drink was pretty nasty though. I had a hard time getting it down and felt kinda sick thereafter.

    sorry to hear that
have you had thyroid function tests ?

after diabtes has been ruled out ( both type 1 and type 2 ) then maybe go for thyroid function test ?

    best of luck,

hope youre feeling okay as well.

oh I'm nowhere close to having diabetes of other type, that really wasn't a concern.

I've had a million thyroids done, but never by an endocrinologist.

there's like a million things off balance, it lines up more with pcos.

my hmo normally only gives the 3 hour glucose tolerance test to preggos but for some reason, they let me have it 10 years ago and I was not pregnant. my blood sugar dropped to 70. they should repeat it since so many in my family have diabetes, shouldn't they?

I gag easily and the orange did not make me ill. Although, when I had an upper GI test and I drank some bubbly stuff, I made an involuntary wretching noise right in the tech's face.

as far as I know, 70 isn't that bad, I think that's like the low end of normal, but I'm no doctor. You can get the tests at anytime really, you just have to ask when you go to the doctor.

Not to freak you out GTD, but I really think you need to do the proper Glucose Tolerance Test over 3 hours with 3 lots of blood collected.

I've had all kinds of sugar tests over the years and my blood sugar was always fine or within range, but it wasn't until they gave me the GTT that they could see that I had Insulin Resistance, which is often caused by PCOS.

I'm not a doctor but my money's on you having pcos too, having read your threads on the symptoms you've been suffering and recognizing many of the symptoms. I wouldn't give up on the pcos just yet, it can be difficult to get a diagnosis. If this test that you've had doesn't clarify it, I'd be insisting on a proper 3 hour, 3 collection GTT and even an ultrasound. You need to know what you're dealing with here and the doctors need to get serious and help you.
    NOPE!!!
