Drives me crazy. Sadly, my wife is one of those people that are reluctant to part with things. I, on the other hand, will throw something out or donate it to charity if I haven't used it in like three weeks or so. Before getting married, I literally had like one plate, one glass, one fork, etc... Basically, I could throw every thing I own in my truck and vanish. Now there are rooms in my house that are full of useless crap to the point that I'm considering "accidently" burning the mother fucker to the ground.

  • While getting ready to move I threw away almost 10 bags of clutter. It felt great. :D
  • i DESPISE clutter, with a passion. perhaps growing my with a very messy mom, thus a very cluttered home...has made me UBER organized/neat and tidy...to an extreme. my poor hubby, hahaha. i have lightened up considerably over the years, and he has also become more tidy ;)...so i think we've found our balance.

my home, my desk/cube.....all of my environment is VERY neat and organized. even when i first started at my firm, one of the first things i took care of was the boxes and boxes of files just piled up on my window wall, interfering with my view of the chrysler building, and yes....feeling stressed being surrounded by such clutter. i know i got a lot of kudos for cleaning up over 3+ YEARS worth of BS that no one ever bothered to do.

so HELL YEA, i hear ya! :p
    Stay with me...

Haha! Well, I am certainly not neat, tidy, or organized but I still hate clutter.

I'm kind of like that sometimes... I hang onto things until I'm absolutely sure I won't need them again, and then I chuck them. So my husband will say to me, about one thing or another... "Do you want to throw this away now or later?" :D
  • I was actually good about clutter at my last job. Those fools used so much paper and it was so manic at times, that I felt like I HAD to keep reorganizing and cleaning my desk every time I had a spare second. My boss's desk (well, actually her entire office) looked like a war zone. And then she would get mad at me when she lost stuff.

When I'm in the anti-clutter mood and she isn't around, a lot of things get tossed without her permission. Every once in a great while I throw something away and she winds up actually needing it and looking for it a couple of weeks later. However, it happens so infrequenty that I refuse to quit the purging. I just keep moving stuff out as she moves it in.

If you're really the type that only had one of everything before you were married...maybe you both need to compromise a bit. I'm not saying she is right to keep everything...but, it could be that she's not as wrong as you think... Does that make sense?

The reason I say this is because, like you, sometimes my husband is inclined to throw things away that I know we'll need again! I know I can be a bit of a pack rat, but I hate to have to buy something again that he just threw away.

I don't think she is wrong for being a pack rat, it just doesn't mesh well with my personality. When in doubt, simplify your existence - that is my motto. In any case, we are alike in so many ways this one issue doesn't cause too many problems. I'm glad she has a hard time parting with me!

Yeah, it's good that you're one of the things she chooses to horde. :D (Oh, and I understand what you're saying. I wasn't criticizing you or trying to give unsolicited advice...lol. I was just sharing the point of view of a fellow pack rat. ;))

That sounds like my husband and I. Our similarities far outweigh our differences, and that probably makes our differences less difficult to deal with. :)

Clutter makes me feel claustrophobic. My friend has an unbelievably untidy house.I have to clear the couch to be able to sit down and shelves are heaving with piles of papers, letters etc.I can only sit in her house for about ten minutes before I feel smothered and leave.
I am a thrower outer.Once its done its out.

if anyone has a clutter/hoarding problem...pm me. I might have an opportunity for you. ;)
  • You know I don't like it either yet I am a big offender. I keep things for years and have piles of crap in my basement. SOOO bad! I am trying to throw that stuff away but I just can't part.

had a day off today and totally cleaned up, too much clutter, things in the way, papers needed to be filed away, old magazines and newspapers not read put into the recycle bin

Some of it is kind of corny, but she has a whole system of getting rid of clutter, and why you should.
