Yeah, it's becoming the same here. I guess I'm a dinosaur coz I remember the old days. It's just bullshit that quality education is becoming unobtainable if you're not wealthy and that it's setting smart people that want to go further up to a life of debt before they even get started.

hmm. well I can't speak for other states too much, well other than California, they have an excellent university system
but NY has excellent state schools and they are the 'least expensive' option, and there is financial aid available and scholarships.

Dumb Ass: Will this (PSP game) play on my PS2?
    Smart Ass (Me): No
DA: When did they stop doing that?
    SA: They never did that.
    DA: Well mine does.
    SA: No it doesn't.
    DA: Yeah it does.
SA: No, your PS2 plays PS1 games.
    DA: Yeah, and these.
SA: No, the PSP games are only for the Playstation Portable.
DA: Whatever. Go ahead and gimme that one. (PSP game)
SA: Okay, but if you buy this and open it and it doesn't work, you can't return.
DA: I won't need to return it.

The thing is, as I see it, doesn't it make for a smarter world in general if those with the aptitude are given every possible opportunity to strive?
I mean the earning capacity, the wealth they will create simply by being able to pursue their academic inclinations, well there's got to be more money in that in the long run, surely?
    NOPE!!!

theoretically I guess that is so, Jeanie
but colleges, like anything else, are also businesses and imo they want to get paid for their services up front! Who knows what someone's going to do with a degree :)
I mean it depends what you get the degree in, too. If you get an MBA, yeah, you'll earn a ton. My psychology degree I could wipe my behind with, you can't get really high paying jobs with that. and with my master's the starting salary for a social worker is usually about $30,000!! Well maybe now it's higher, that's what it was 10 yrs ago. I made more b/c I was fortunate, but its not a high payoff field!

I mean yeah I think everyone should have access to and/or free education (and health care! Hello Canada!) but well, we'll see

Yeah, I know what you're saying Allie. I understand it and I realize that education has to be funded but I find it sad that there are really bright people out there that potentially could make HUGE differences to the quality of life for all of us and they have to scrimp and save, go with out and in some cases miss out entirely purely because of money. Maybe it would work better if it was means tested? So for instance if you get your psych degree it's free until you start earning over $60,000 per year or do equivalent community service in that field or something? I know it won't happen, but it doesn't stop me from wishing it so. :)

Dude, my little sister went to college in Joplin. I remember that Walmart! I'll never forget my first impression. I walk in the front doors and some very large man with odor issues is lumbering towards me with overalls and no shirt underneath. Priceless! I just had to stop and admire to take it all in.

    *raises hand*

Well, my job doesn't actually suck in theory but it does in reality. I'm thrilled to death to have actually gotten a job in my field and when I tell people what I do it sounds so good to me that I get excited and think I like it. But then I actually get to work and remember that my boss is impossible to work with. He lives in an alternate reality. I call it Larryworld. It's like working at Disney World where my job is to make someone else's fantasy a reality. But some things are just not possible, ya know? And I get paid shit. Okay, not total shit, but I don't get paid well and there's no hope of ever getting a decent raise. (Is it too much to ask to be able to afford to go to one Pearl Jam concert since 1993?!)

But I don't feel like I can leave because:
    1. I really do like the work I'm supposed to be doing and don't believe there are any other jobs in the area doing the same work. And I love my co-workers. And I have great benefits.
    2. I feel like my ticket out of here is to finish my master's degree, and my employer is paying for that.
    3. Mortgage. Student loans. Credit cards. Etc. I couldn't possibly afford to take a pay cut.

Okay - whew! Now I'll have to remind myself that I'm healthy and I have wonderful friends and family and cats and I'm not homeless and hopefully I'll stop feeling sorry for myself and get some work done. :)
