Madonna adopting Malawi kid

So apparently she can now officially adopt the kid from Malawi.

What does everyone think of this? On the one hand, it's obviously good that the child gets out of the appalling conditions faced in the home country. But I don't know, the cynic inside of me sees this as some sort of revolting publicty stunt. Creates a nice picture, the beautiful white Western woman adopting a poor little black child.

It seems that everyone views Madonna as a saviour, but then there's literally hundreds of other organisations that are trying to help poorer countires but they get jack shit for attention.

What are your thoughts?

the money she spent trying to get this one kid to lift her up in the public's eye as some sort of philanthropist could have aided Malawi children for many years.

    sigh.

there is no shame to this publicity whore.

I see what yous are saying about publicity but I don't think that it is a bad thing, per se, for someone to adopt a child and give him the opportunity at a better life. She promoted an organization called Raising Malawi during her last tour, I believe (I saw a concert on TV) and the publicity she brings in terms of bringing awareness about the country-I don't think that is negative.

Oh no. I don't think that's nice to say about a lady, CB even if you don't think she is a lady. I've always been a Madonna fan. I'm showing my age by saying I had her Records-those black round LP things!

And I get to see her in Vancouver this October!!!! :D

Seriously, there are worse things she could be promoting. She isn't perfect by any means. Who is? There are several points on which I'm sure she and I would disagree. However, I still regard her as Iconic.

Sure, it's sick to use people for publicity, but you have to see all the good that has come out of this. Children in Malawi can't be adopted by non Malawi citizens...how many people in that country do you think are able to adopt children? Those kids have absolutely no chance whatsoever. Their country is actually considering allowing foreign adoptions now, giving many more children a chance at life.

its her life so she can do what she wants... its not like she's in Amy Winehouse's state and is sticking £40k worth of smack up her bum vein every 3 hours.. she's rescuing a child from a life of poverty... she could be doing a shitload worse
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

Yeh, I'm with you there. I'm in two minds also... main problem I have is any kid having to grow up with madonna as a 'mum' but then at least the kid will grow up. Also, to see celebs using their money to get around laws in order to get what they want is :o . And yep, that money could have been better used to ensure a better life in the kids home country with their family. The first kid had a dad...I don't know anything about this one. But if you're gonna adopt, adopt a kid who has nobody to care for it... not one whose family simply can't afford to care for it... if you like the kid so much fund the family or the community.

I have TOTAL respect for her in that regard also... but I've never ever liked her. I don't like people who act stuck up anyway and she seems very very false! I don't know her but her public persona definitely comes across as somebody I wouldn't even acknowledge if I passed on the street.

why! :D no but seriously, why would she appear to be doing it for the right reasons but not Madonna? I think they should all be like Drew Barrymore and help ALL the kidz instead of one! Like you suggested up there.

I haven't followed this much, but apparently (much like the brangelinas) she is making substantial investments in development projects in Malawi as well.

:o I think it's mainly cos I DO hear more about the charities they are trying to promote. I dunno, I just can't bring myself to imagine that madonna actually has a heart and is capable of bringing someone up in a loving environment :o:D but I've seen Ange doing emotion... so it's easier to picture :D

Lol, Drew helps ALL the kids?

I see your point. Madonna never used to have a heart til she became a mom. Believe it or not she has changed A LOT. I think its hard for people to see that cuz they alreddie have an image of her. Her fault yes. And angie? ehh i say its all an act! Drew does indeed get involved. I love her!
