His entire first year he was a total lunatic. He had so much work he said he felt guilty sleeping.
I expect to be the same way- but I already have tix to see 6 concerts the rest of this year so there HAS to be at least some free time.

first year is rough, but far from impossible
which school are you attending?
2003 law school grad here...now practicing litigator.
Yeah, first year is hard. I worked like a dog...hardest I'd ever had to study in my life. I had a 6th grader and never missed a soccer game, school play, or parents day. You just have to plan around it and know that you're going to sacrifice some (maybe lots) of sleep.
My one hint....do not be intimidated by "the awesome other student"...you know know him or her...AOS always has the right answer when you didn't even understand the question, is a fifth generation lawyer, already has a job lined up after graduation....yada...yada...yada....
You'll be shocked at how many times the AOS falls flat on his or her ass. (It is OK to smile when that happens!)
DO find a group of friends that you can study with, bitch to, and in general enjoy. My study group are still my best friends and I love them dearly. They have stood with me through some very, very horrible times and some very very wonderful times. Even tho' we are all in different cities...and states...we are still very close.
Have fun! If I can help with anything, PM...I'll try to answer if I still remember anything. (It's amazing how much exits your brain after the bar exam!)
Best wishes,
Day

1st year kicks your ass, there is no doubt. But I actually enjoyed it because you have one thing to do and that's it. Second year and third year are almost tougher because you'll probably be interviewing and working in addition to school. Then the bar, the job, etc.
Anyway, good luck. Just focus on the job at hand, and take it one day at a time. You'll be fine.
And... it's not to late to become a firefighter.
At the end of every week, review what you did in class, and build an outline or review sheet of what you did that week. Add to it each following week. At the end of the semester, you will have a great study guide for your final exam.
ALWAYS prepare for class.
If there is something you are having trouble with, go talk to your professors.
Finally, make time for yourself and have some fun. I treated my first year as a full time job.....during the week, work hard.j On weekends (except during final exam season) have fun.
best advice yet
Thanks for all the advice everyone!!! Honestly, I needed to hear some of the stuff you said tonight. Sure, I could've went to a law school forum to talk but its better to hear people with similar interests other than schooling share their experiences.
I just finished reading Whose Monet, by Humbach (who is actually a professor at my school) and wrote my first brief ever!!! Orientation ends tomorrow and class starts Monday. Let the games begin.

good luck! im coasting into year three and living the good life now
fyi, i didn't do any of the stuff suggested above... no notes, no weekly reviews, no study groups. i'm still passing, though my grades could be more impressive. i did read all my assignments though.
my best advice is to stay the hell off the internet in class. i've missed whole lectures reading espn's college football wrap up coverage
I stayed up on my reading assignments for the first semester or so. It kicked my ass though. If you do everything you have to do, it takes like 4-6 hours every night, in my experience. Tough to sustain that for the whole first year. You end up figuring out what you absolutely need to do, and what you can fudge. It's part of the whole game.
ROFL...but do be sure to participate in the class game of "Turkey Bingo" It makes for some great drunken retelling in later years.
