My cat is very aggressive. She bit my husband about 2 weeks ago, and I thought he was going to need stiches. She will bite me while I'm asleep, and she hisses, growls, barks, charges at anyone who comes in the house. She does allow me to pick her up when she is in a "good mood," but she is never friendly with vistors. She even bit the somone who came into my home to help fix my stove!!! I have tried all the behavioral therapy crap, and she just gets more pissed off. I think I am going with kitty prozac now. Has anyone tried it?

  • No, real prozac. They make it for cats too. They make valium, elivil, prozac, paxil and a few more for depressed/anxious/ aggressive felines. LOL. I think it is funny, but I think we need it. I guess I could try to feed her some special brownie's, but I don't she would eat them.

Do yourself a favor - put the cat to sleep. The last thing you need is a lawsuit the next time she bites somebody. Trust me, this could save you your house. There are plenty other cats out there who need a home.
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.

Yeah, you wouldn't want the husband to eat the special brownies by mistake! LOL. Is the cat declawed? I've never heard of elivil but it sounds bad. I mean, look at the word: if you take out li (as in lie) you get evil. That can't be good!

Like people, some animals just have bad wiring. The right person (cat whisperer) might be able to help you and I hope so, but sometimes there is little that can be done.

  • She is 8 years old, and I have had her for so long. I just can't put her to sleep. And everyone that comes in my home, I tell them to not touch the cat. I usually put her in a seperate room locked up, but I let her out around family. She has bit my mother, father, husband, friends, brother, me...she bites everyone. Yes she is declawed, thank god!

  • Maybe there is an herbal supliment I can give her.

has she always been that way, or has it been recently that's she's been biting everybody? if it's a more recent phenomenon perhaps there's something new in her environment to cause such a reaction. you should talk to the vet and see if there's a behaviorist you can consult. herbal supplements is a good idea too, maybe explore the homeopathic route.

i figure you were kidding about the brownies :) remember chocolate is poisonous to cats and dogs!

good luck, i hope you can find a solution to get her under control!

Dont go this way...no wait a minute I'll come over and tell you what your cat is thinking and you give me $500.

I say put the cat down. I have 2 cats and a dog but isnt worth the risk and getting sued.
  • One of my cats is aggressive. She's sweet with me and she tolerates my other cat (although I think she gave her an ulcer!), but she growls and hisses whenever someone else comes into the house and she hurls herself against the door if there's another cat outside. When I take her to the vet they always think I'm bringing in a mountain lion cause she acts like such a freak in her carrier :o She's never bitten anyone, but I think she would if she had the chance. Most people are smart enough to keep their distance. My vet recommended feliway - which i think comes in spray form or you can put it in her water. The psychiatrist I work with suggested prozac. I haven't tried it yet though.

  • I can't believe anyone would suggest putting the cat to sleep! What do you do with an agressive human being? Kill them? Anyway, I would suggest trying Feliway too. My beloved 1st kitty Jezebel disliked anyone but me but would only go after someone if approached. She always hated my second kitty Oria but she learned to tolerate her. I just let her be herself and gave her love only when she wanted. When I had to take her to the vet it was torture for both of us. When the time came that I had to put her to sleep I brought her home from the vet and let her be relaxed for as long as I could then the vet I was dealing with was kind enough to come to my home to put her to sleep as to not have all the stress involved in bringing her to the office. She died in my arms sitting with me on my couch. Jezebel was my 1st kitty and I just learned to love her the way she was. Still miss her to this day.

Good luck to you and let us know how it works out. :)

I know!!! (I had a kitty named Jezebel once)

I have read that declawing a cat can cause behaviorial problems like you describe so please, try and help your cat with medicine.

I understand this may be difficult for you to grasp but there is a difference between humans and animals. You are probably one of those that would save an animal before saving a human life...

Pfft. I've lost faith in humanity. Big fucking deal. I'd rather take a cat any day.

You need to take her to the vet. There very well could be health issues that are making her act like this. Pissed off may not be the correct word for what she is feeling - she could be totally terrified. Does she fluff up her fur? Really, take her to the vet. There is something not right. I own 6 cats, and they are ALL chill dudes. They sleep, beg for food, eat treats, and play. Occasionally a couple will wrestle, but no one spontaneously bites anyone. If a stranger is around, they may hide in another room. There is something going on with your cat that you need to figure out with the help of a vet.

I'm sorry. I'll be the 1st to admit that I am a little insensitive when it comes to pets. I don't like spending money on vet bills when I have a family of five to feed. When I took my puppy to get shots and to be neutered I was tempted to leave him there when they called me and told me the price -$192! That's almost a whole day's pay for me...
I do have to agree with JaneNY that there is something wrong with the cat. It sounds to me like your cat is in serious pain.

I agree with the people who say to try Feliway. It comes in a spray, but you can also get it in dispenser that's similar to a plug-in air freshener so it's working all the time.

I also agree with those who asked whether this is a new phenomenon and someone who said declawing can make cats misbehave. (I'm very agreeable tonight. :)) If the cat hasn't always been this way, maybe there's a reason that can/should be dealt with.

But whatever you do, don't put her to sleep! I have a cat who's very mean/moody. The vets refuse to see him for their own safety. But he always has a reason for behaving the way he does. I don't think he's mean - just misunderstood. :) And he provides many wonderful opportunities for me to practice understanding, patience, and how to get along with those who don't do what I want.
