I just graduated high school and am now getting ready to go to college. I really need some good books to read the summer. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

What program are you going to major in?

you can search and base on the books in that area...
    PJ- 04/29/2003.06/24,25,27,28,30/2008.10/27,28,30,31/2009
    EV- 08/09,10/2008.06/08,09/2009

I don't really want books about my major at all or anything that has to necessarily do with school. Just some good, meaningful books you think would be good for someone my age to read.

have you read "ismael" and "into the wild"? i would suggest them.
    other than that:
    - hermann hesse "siddhartha"
    - robert schneider "schlafes bruder" ("brother of sleep")

Ishmael's a good one... if, for no other reason, that it will inspire you to read more interesting stuff. I would also recommend 1984 if you haven't read it. Papillon by Henri Charriere is probably the best adventure book I've ever read... it's soooo much fun. Touching the void is a brilliant brilliant story of defeating the odds.

i really enjoyed "catcher in the rye" by j.d salinger. i read it in high school in grade 11 and my english teacher was so cool and was really into the book. the main character holden is really funny and i found it pretty easy to relate to him, how he talked and the way he felt about people and the things in his life..its a great read!

  • If you want a sports book that's a little cerebral, check out Living On The Black by John Feinstein. It's a book about pitching (baseball) but it's much more than just abook about pitching

    My 3 all-time favs

"SOG: The Secret Wars of America's Commandos in Vietnam" by John L Plaster is a real page-turner if you are into the blood and guts sort of thing. It's basically a collection of first-hand accounts of Green Beret suicide missions in Vietnam. Crazy stuff. A lot of the missions were literally a group of 12 guys fighting off 100's of Viet Cong while waiting for the chopper to come get them out of there.

"Guns, Germs & Steel" by Jared Diamond was a real eye-opener for me. It basically tries to disspell fundamental racism as we know it by explaining for differences between races and technological advancement through external factors such as geography and plain old uncontrollable circumstances.

"From Beirut to Jerusalem" by Thomas Friedman is an autobiographical account of a reporter who was stationed in Beirut during the 1980's, when the fighting and turmoil was at its peak. It really puts into perspective the insanely complicated religious politics that are at the root of all problems over there.

LOL... I can't believe you recommended Nikki's book. I was going to post that more or less as a joke. I am in the process of reading it now and all I can say is WOW! Hard to believe that man is still alive and I am not even that far into the book.
