He goes from "Into The Wild" to "Speed Racer"? So much for your acting credibility buddy. I hope you enjoyed the short lived artistic integrity. Nice career decision. See you on Psychic Friends Network.

Well that's fine, but the movie is a giant dog turd. I guess everyone needs a paycheck, but you'd think that after "Into The Wild" he'd have his pick of good scripts.

He did do this before into the wild. He is an actor. He wants to act. What's wrong with that?

  • First of all no one knows if Speed Racer is going to suck or not. Remember how everyone thought the first Pirates was going to suck and Johnny Depp sold out. He ended up getting a friggin oscar nod.

Second of All there is nothing wrong with doing Blockbusters and Indy movies. Real actors have been balancing both for years.

    Give the kid a break.

i told you old man, we're going nowhere

sir laurence olivier once said when asked why he's been in some 'steaming dog turds' that he's an actor, its what he does. if someone offers him an acting job then he's gonna do it. simple. oh and sir larry had plenty of credibility. :p:D

agreed. Speed Racer was a smart choice, in my opinion. Movies like that are huge now a days.

Its how you build a career so you're not constantly ending up in obscure movies collecting weak paydays. Into the Wild was a great movie, but a commercial flop. Actors taking a role in a summer blockbuster aren't sacrificing their credibility if they're still taking roles they can sink their teeth into. The chance to be in a Wachowski brothers movie might be a big deal to a young guy. Cate Blanchette isn't any less credible because she is in Indy 4, coming off of playing Bob Dylan. It just means she is versatile.

And he also did "Lords of Dogtown". A movie that I didn't particularly enjoy -- especially after seeing the excellent documentary that it's based on, "Dogtown and Z-Boys". He's an actor and even the best of them do shitty films from time to time. That being said, I'll probably go see "Speed Racer" because I loved the cartoon when I was a kid and I like Emile Hirsch.
    Rock on!

Unfortunately there just aren't enough films like Into the Wild for a young actor. So he makes family fun films like Speed Racer. I was much more enthusiastic about it before I watched the trailer. But I could see 5th and 6th graders totally loving it. :D

Where is this high and mighty attitude coming from? Just because the kid does a artsy piece that Ed was involved with - now the kid can no longer do any other kind of fun nonsense type of movie?

I don't think Emile lives on quite as high of a horse as you think he does. How do you know he is not a Speed Racer fan? Who are you to judge his movie choices?

Didn't he also have a small part in "3:10 To Yuma?"

Into the Wild wasn’t even an art film, it was about a guy who got lost in the woods.

Little Shop of Horrors, now THAT is an art film.

How come when talking about Emile, I never hear anyone mention The Emperor's Club. One of my favorite movies. Is that movie not popular or something. I love watching it.

The guy is an actor. Movie roles pay the bills. The Speed Racer movie will probably rake in some dough and have widespread visiblilty, thus allowing Mr. Hirsch to expose his abilities to other producers/casting directors for future work. Jesus Christ... it's his job to act and play different roles.

Some of you guys act like Into the Wild is fucking Citizen Kane or The Godfather. It was an OK movie, but I suppose that since Eddie Vedder was involved in it, it suddenly gets vaulted to "Cinematic Masterpiece" status.
