Stop federal subsidies for farmers who grow grain for biodiesel and ethanol production.

  • I read the above comment but I'm not understanding why there's a rice and grain shortage.

the united states is like the second largest producer of rice in the world or something.

but no, I haven't seen any problems at the store (I was just there yesterday) and I haven't seen anything in the local paper.

I suppose, yes, there is that obvious answer.

Thailand still retains its status as the world's largest exporter of rice in terms of volume and value, with Vietnam coming second, Thai Department of Foreign Trade said on Monday.

Rachane Pojanasuntorn, the department's director-general, was quoted by the Thai News Agency as saying the country's rice exports in the first quarter of this year reaching 1.79 million tons, worth 22.64 billion baht (567.4 million U.S. dollars

The price of exported Thai rice is around 317 U.S. dollars per ton on average.

He was confident that the export volume and value would continue to increase.

Its volume for this year is expected to reach a target of 7.5 million tons, up 2.7 percent from that of last year.

Vietnam set a target to export 5 million tons of rice this year, down from 5.28 million tons last year.

In the first quarter of this year, Vietnam exported 1.1 million tones of rice.

Because of this, Thailand and Vietnam still retained the world's first and second rankings as major rice exporters.

well fine I said "like second" I didn't know the exact numbers. point is the US produces way more rice than people realize. we wouldn't really have to rely on imports.

I haven't seen any mention of it in the regular news (gee, I wonder why) but it did make a blurb in one of our weeklies (The Stranger):
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16 Today, Last Days turns to the aforementioned real-life horror story, provided by Associated Press business writer Ellen Simon. (For those wondering about this week's individually identified sources: Due to a plethora of ineluctable forces, the news reports from which Last Days draws our stories are being written by fewer and fewer people, and it only seems fair to cite these increasingly rare creatures by name.) As Simon reports, "The U.S. is wrestling with the worst food inflation in 17 years," with eggs costing 25 percent more in February than they did a year ago, and milk and other dairy products jumping 13 percent. Experts say 2008 will be worse, due to the significantly higher costs of wheat, corn, soybeans, milk, and transportation, as well as a handful of global finance issues. As Simon writes, "Rapid economic growth in China and India has increased demand for meat there, and exports of U.S. products, such as corn, have set records as the weak dollar has made them cheaper. That's lowered the supply of corn available for sale in the U.S., raising prices here. Ethanol production has also diverted corn from dinner tables and into fuel tanks. Soybean prices have gone up as farmers switched more of their acreage to corn. Drought in Australia has even affected the price of bread, as it led to tighter global wheat supplies." By next week, reports will surface on the rationing of flour, rice, and cooking oil by a number of major American retailers, as "demand outstrips supply." Holy crap, and stay tuned.
