How can Mike Ditka ever sleep at night knowing he gave the ball to that fat fucking rookie William the Refridgerator Perry and NOT WALTER PAYTON!!

still pisses me off 20 some years later. Walter Payton was one of the greatest people ever, not just athletes. To not let him score in that joke of a game......

  • If it was a joke of a game, why would it be important that he scored?

    Liken it to this:

the pats have been as good as they are for all the Beli years but never won a superbowl. They finally make it and win but Tom Brady doesn't throw a touchdown, but a 3rd string rookie running back flea flicker play does. The rest of the scores are on the ground.

Yes they win a superbowl, but one of the best QB's ever in what will be his only chance to throw a td in a superbowl does not(nor does he run one in) After all he did for the franchise and city etc he doesn't get to put 6 on the board in his biggest game ever.

I know the pats "have no ego" and team accomplishments are more important than any stats. throw that aside as it was that way for Payton as well. That is not the argument, nor is the time of the game. This is strictly about the principle of giving fat fridge(a fucking rookie that year mind you) a score and not Walter Payton the best ever to don the orange and navy

but Walter was the greatest running back of all time by many's account by the time of XX, why does Ditka not give him the 1 yard chance to cap off his hall of fame career in stead of a gimimick like the fridge?

Your gotta give your go to guys the chance. Walter never spoke poorly of Ditka about it, and yes MIke syas he regrets not doing it, but damn Coach you gotta think.

Walter was the most loved guy in Chicago at the time by far, and all of the town wanted him to get the dream of a superbowl TD, instead we got the Fridge.....

Again winning the superbowl was awesome and the goal, but giving Sweetness that chance would have been the right thing to do as the coach. Yeah yeah yeah he had plenty of chances to score n the game on his other carries....blah blah blah leave that argument out, I am talking just about the situation of giving a TD to the fridge over the greatest player in your franchises history int he biggest game of his life an the franchises life.

by the way it was fun kicking Bean towns ass that year, an dyes I want the pats to win this year so the damn Dolpihins of 72 shut their damn pie holes forever

It was a very shitty thing to do. To boot, Payton didn't really have a career game that day either. NE was so keyed in on stopping him he only ran for like 43 yards. would have been nice for him to at least get a touchdown.

  • Look at the play-by-play if you can find it. Payton was given plenty of opportunities to score, and he didn't. He just had a bad game in general, probably because the Pats totally focused on him. He only had like 60 yards rushing or something.
  • that Perry touchdown was a goal line play and the Fridge was a big dude who could run through anyone. who's to say that Payton could have busted through that line for the score.

Have you ever seen Payton's goal line runs. That guy could launch himself in the air so high it was sick. Plus, Walter Payton was no creampuff RB. He could hit just as hard as any linebacker back in his day. Getting through that line would not have been a problem.

Considering Payton retired with more rushing tds than anyone else in history, I'm pretty sure he could have navigated that one yard against a Patriot defense that was totally demoralized by that point.

lol...again look at the game record. It WAS a problem on that day.

That day. I'm saying on any given Sunday he could have made it happen. I haven't watched that game in ages but if I'm not mistaken it was late in the game and that NE defense was beaten up. And on that play in particular, again, if I'm not mistaken only one defender touched Perry into the endzone. Now, I dont remember if Payton was in the backfield on the play, and Perry getting the ball, rather than blocking took NE by surprise but needless to say, Ditka not giving Payton the nod in a game where they led by more than two scores was a very shitty thing to do. Even if they got a field goal out of it, Ditka would have manned up and given Payton as good a chance as any to get his 6.

Well, Payton had 19 carries for positive yardage and 3 for negative yardage. So that would have been an 86% chance of him gaining a measly yard. So yeah bad call by Mike.

Ditka did try to make amends for it in the 4th quarter when the Pats turned the ball over inside their own ten by sending the second string Offense out there with Payton, but a illegal block in the back penalty pushed the drive back and it ended with Payton running for 6 yards on 4th and goal from the 11.

I'm pretty sure at that time if The Coach knew it was going to be the Bears only Superbowl for 20 years and Walter's only shot, he would have given him the ball on every play. The Bears had a great team then, best defense ever, so I'm pretty sure Ditka and everyone else in Chicago expected more Superbowl appearances in the years to come. Well, it's easy to look back and say "Shoulda" "Coulda" but you can't blame anyone for something like that.

Another great decision, nonetheless. Did ever really produce for New Orleans?
