Mike Bibby speaks the truth!

Finally, someone calls out the raging bandwagons that go on in Boston sports. First the Sox with 'Red Sox Nation', which is nothing but a bunch of people around the country that don't have the patience to root for their own team, and only root for the Sox because they feel it's better than rooting for the Yanks. But this bandwagon has now spread to the Celtics once they started winning. It's funny to see people around the country that don't even care for a particular sport jump on a bandwagon of a team with history once they start winning. It's equally funny for true die hards to not have any problem with it- actually they embrace these people.

Boston —- Leave it up to Mike Bibby to light the fire with the Boston fans.

The Hawks point guard lit into Celtics fans before practice Tuesday, calling them "bandwagon jumpers."

"They were kind of loud at the beginning," he said. "But a lot of these fans are bandwagon jumpers trying to get on this now. I played here last year, too, and I didn't see three-fourths of them. They're for the team now, and they might get a little rowdy, but that's about it."

When asked if he thought they were fair-weather fans, joining the party only after the Celtics' offseason trades that brought Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to town, Bibby didn't hesitate to pour more gasoline on the fire.

"You could say that," he said. "I remember them having bags on their heads [last season]. It's a different look. I guess that's what happens when you win."

Bibby and Josh Smith were the most noticeable targets of a small section of fans at TD Banknorth Garden on Sunday. The two got into a verbal sparring match with some of the crowd as they left the floor at the end of Game 1.

"It's good that they know I'm here," Bibby said. "It was just a little confrontation to get them involved a little bit. But they are fair-weather fans if you ask me."

If Bibby thought things were sticky Sunday (he shot 2-for-10 from the floor and had just five points and one assist in the Hawks' 23-point loss), they ought to be downright wicked tonight.

"Coming off a 2-for-10 shooting performance, you expect a guy to say something like that," Celtics center Kendrick Perkins said. "We have the best fans in the world, but we don't expect other players to like our fans."

Garnett's reaction was relatively benign.

"That's Mike Bibby speaking his mind. I wouldn't say it's the smartest comment, but that's Mike Bibby," Garnett said. "I'm not going to get into any comments going back and forth. If I was in my younger days, I probably would have said something, but I learned that you let your play do your talking."

Although the Hawks have yet to sell out Philips Arena for Saturday's Game 3, Perkins is under the impression that the crowd will be bigger than usual in Atlanta.

"It's about time," he said. "It takes us going down there to pack their building out."

That sounds like a few jealous sports fans pissed off because people are rooting for a winning team instead of their loser ass teams.

But I don’t watch sports so I could be wrong.

Isn't that the case with virtually any team that turns it around that well.

Before 2005, you could walk up to the box office and get a ticket for many games at Yankee Stadium the day of the game.

When the Giants were 0-2 this year, weren't many ready to throw Tom Coughlin under the bus.

And the Mets, the minute something goes wrong they start booing but one minute later they're back on the wagon.

And didn't the vast majority of Celtic fans want Doc Rivers fired a year ago this time?

I can go on and on, but Bibby's not breaking any new ground here with his generalization as sports as a "What Have You Done for Me Now" thing.

  • Boston was getting way too cocky, which is why them losing the super bowl was fanfuckingtastic.

I'm sure the city will get a nice big helping of humble pie again the NBA playoffs, and in the baseball playoffs as well.

and whether it's stupid or not stupid, bibby played in sacramento, a city that for year's was one of the worst teams in the NBA but the fans still sold out the joint, so there wasn't a bandwagon once the Kings got good.

So true! But once you've lived in Sacramento you realize either you go see the Kings or you go line dancing. I'll take Arco Arena any night!!

maybe so, but the fact that they soldout a market that before the advent of the internet and direct tv was commonly referred to in these parts as "NBA Siberia" is still impressive.

Every single team in professional sports has a bandwagon effect when they start winning.

Plus, if your team is terrible, I fully understand losing interest for a while...it's very frustrating.

The Braves consistantly pull pretty decent numbers considering we barely care about baseball in the south. If it's not fall we could give a shit or we'd rather play golf or catch up on recruiting. Not to mention the stadiums are pretty far away from the majority of people who have the money to go to them.

The Hawks are Awful, no one is paying 80 bucks a seat to see Billy Knights awful blown draft picks bore us to death. Atlanta is a HUGE NBA town... but they aren't stupid... why the hell would anyone want to watch huge busts like Marvin Williams learn how to play basketball? I can see that level of play at Ga Tech for free. Atlanta sells out games when other great teams come in town... No one cares about the Hawks, and only a small group of die hard mullet clad transplants give a shit about the Abysmal hockey team that refuses to draft defensemen.

Atlanta is not a bad sports town... there just aren't that many passionate sports fans.... There are just a shit load of lame ass yuppies in this town. Lots of them.... Fucking Red Sox fans.

When Boston sucked just like any other town in America no one outside of a small group of die hards is wasting money to see that crap.

Atlanta gets shit on nationally but it's largely like that everywhere especially in warm cities where there is more to do. Atlanta Yuppies are simply bored with Baseball (and black people don't much like it so good luck filling the stadium every night).. the most boring sport in America (we're an NL city afterall what's to be excited about other than John Smoltz?)

Boston can Boo Mike Bibby, but I applaud him for speaking the truth... outside of a very few Southy meatbags.... who gave a shit about the loser Celtics enough to go pay to see them play last year..... not that many. Truth hurts sometimes but if KG isn't there neither are the people. LA wouldn't sell tickets without Kobe.

Sports fans in general are bandwagoners because most people aren't fanatical enough to tie themselves in with a franchise that sucks... they are the smart ones. Supporting the Falcons for all these years has done virtually nothing for me but raise my bloodpressure.

Sports are a hell of a lot more fun when the team is good and the stadium is full. Weeknight baseball, weeknight hockey and weeknight NBA/College Baskeball.... mostly incredibly boring and time consuming.

It's hilarious anyone would bag on people not wasting thier money to watch crap. Marvin Williams sucks dick. They drafted Sheldon WIlliams too. Uh the only reason bibby is even here is because Billy Knight is a Tard and didn't get Chris Paul or Darren Williams.

Don't blame fans for not going blame the sports and the athletes for not being compelling enough to make people pay to see them.

not really in Cleveland. Cleveland has sold out every Browns game since 1999, and the Indians are good and they still only get about 20k a night. We reverse the bandwagon. We follow the loser and don't support the good team

Sounds like sour grapes. The fans were pissed because the front office had been making horrible moves for nearly 20 years and the frustration was evident.

I find that hard to believe. Did you mean 1995? If so, then I would agree.

EDIT: I can see how that would be possible against low level teams since Yankee Stadium holds nearly 58,000 people.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Bibble is just pissed because his team is about to get r o u t e d by the Celtics.

If you put a poor "product" out there on the field/court/ice, why should anyone expect people to pay to see it? Fuck, with the amount of money they are charging, my team had at least compete or have a shot.

See the Orioles. That town loves their team, but they are telling ownership they only way they can that they want a winner....by not showing up to games.

I took it as there are a ton of Celtics fans going to away games for the Celtics. If you watch on TV there are a ton of them when the Celtics are away. That is the exact same thing that happened with the Red Sox after they started winning a couple years ago. Hardly anyone traveled to Red Sox away games pre-2003. If someone was a Red Sox fan living in Texas, they only began making it mandatory to see them after they won the World Series. That is what I have a problem with. You are either a fan or you are not. It's most evident here in Cleveland. In the 90's and early 2000's there were no Red Sox fans anywhere to be found at Jacobs Field; now you go to a game and it's 1/3 Red Sox fans- most making a short drive from their Ohio town. It's so obvious they jumped on the bandwagon. It's like they decided it was too late to jump on the Yankee bandwagon, but when they saw a Red Sox one forming it was too temping to pass up.

That is the problem. It's all these closet fans that don't give a shit about anything until the team becomes good. Nobody traveled to watch the Celtics last year, so why should that change this year because they are good?

WELCOME TO THE BANDWAGON. If your home town teams wont provide you with a winner, and you have been loyal for years and years and have spent thousands, the Red Sox welcome you Indian fans, Pirate fans, Royal fans, etc...

what is the problem anyway? seriously, what is the problem here. this is a losers argument. the guys team is getting routed by the Boston Celtics, and he pulls this out of his back pocket? how the celtic fans are frontrunners? wtf?

Lets talk about how your team is getting murdered by Boston. How they are not showing any heart? How their D is getting manhandled?

Also, fuck basketball. Its boring to watch.

WHat's even more funny about this whole issue is that Chris Paul is freaking dominating. Mike Bibby was brought in because Billy Knight never got a PG. instead drafting Big Pussy Marvin Williams and The landlord Shelden Williams who consequently was traded for..... Mike Bibby.

Basically if the Hawks had a GM EVER who was worth a shit... they would have Chris Paul and would be competing. Instead they have a beaten up and broken version not resembling Mike Bibby when he was in Sacremento...

yeah, I'm not paying to see that. NO one should.

Actually the Celtics attendance last season was rather good considering they were the 2nd worst team n the NBA. They only sold out a few games, but the building was usually at 80% or more capacity...there was significant interest in the young team (most of which now toils in Minneapolis), and people enjoyed the efoort while secretly hoping for close losses so the Celts could land Oden or Durant. Of course the got F'ed in the lottery (As did Memphis), but it worked out fine as Ainge had been stockpiling young talent and made 2 very good deals as a result.
