GMATs

So, after putting it off for 5 years, I've decided to go for my MBA. In order to do so, I am going to take the GMATs in October. Has anyone ever taken them? If so, how difficult did you find the exam? I'm trying to gauge how much prep I'll need before the test. I just ordered a study guide, but I'm debating whether that will be enough.

  • I took it...imo, it's not that difficult to get a score that's good enough to get you into whatever school you're applying for. I wouldn't spend too much time studying...just familiarize yourself with the format of the test and the types of questions they ask. It's not a big deal, believe me. It's just some standard test schools "require" to maintain their accreditation...as long as you don't get ridiculously low scores, it's not gonna be the deciding factor in your application.

I've seen GMAT prep courses that take 9 months to complete. If I were in your shoes, I would give myself longer than till Oct to study. I have not taken the GMAT, but I would think that to really apply yourself to a prep program, you would need at least a solid 6 months. Where you get your MBA is going to determine your salary until you retire. Give it all you got.

What kind of score you need depends a lot on your undergraduate grades and what kind of work experience you've been getting.

If you did well in college and have a recommendation or two from working professionals who can vouch for your potential, then a lot more leeway will be afforded to your GMAT score requirement.

I'm looking to go to Villanova for my MBA. Not quite Wharton, but still a decent business school. I've worked for a major financial firm for the past 5 years, and spent last year studying for Level 1 of the CFA.

    Undergrad GPA was 3.5.

I'll take a look at the study guide I ordered and evaluate if I should allow more prep time from there.

    Thanks for the advice!

You're prolly fine then. That GPA combined with your professional background will be the deciding factors. You'd be better off spendin' time trying to make friends with someone teaching at Villanova rather than studying for the GMAT.
