Otherwise knows as a proprietary backdoor trojan.... Don't you love how this story immediately gets paired up with the silly $999 dollar idiot gem program that does nothing thing (they had in their store in the first place)?
Ever wonder if they spun the piece of shit gem story (it was for sale in their stores after all...i.e. that's where it originate from) so they could release this story immediately after it?
This is the level people need to be paying attention at....

" Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed that the iPhone 3G has a kill switch that can remotely remove software from the devices.

Jobs told The Wall Street Journal that Apple needs the capability in case it inadvertently allows a malicious program -- such as an application that steals user's personal data -- to be distributed to iPhones through its App Store.
"Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull," Jobs said.
Switch Not Used
Jobs' statement reveals Apple hasn't used the kill switch yet, but the company did remove an application from the App Store last week.
Apple removed the $999 "I Am Rich" application, which had the sole purpose of showing people the owner has money. The program creates a red icon that sits on the iPhone deck with a the words "I Am Rich" underneath. After the user activates the application, it glows on the handset like a ruby. "

Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,

I dunno what to make of it. On the one hand I can see his (Jobs) point.
On the other I think it's really suspicious of Apple and him to do such a thing to users and it's now just coming to light. Why, Apple could remove any app they wanted to and that in on itself doesn't quite sit right with me.
I suspect it's going to be used as soon as the 3G is unlocked. (the first iPhone is unlocked through software/Jalilbreaking). Other than the cover story Jobs is toting around why would he allow this?
iPhone users should be able to use any application they want on THEIR phones. It shouldn't be up to a company to decide what one can and cannot do.
i found the iphone very attractive until i read this thread. now i think ill steer clear of everything iapple.
what an ass jobs is!
so if you install something on your computer, dell or whoever has the right to zap it too?
i care about the fact i've had no service from my network on my iphone all frickin day!
ever since the new software update. MEH!
Why should they care? If I buy a car and modify it with stuff that can damage it, should Honda be able to come to my house and take the modifications off or take my car?
was like a picture
of a sunny day

No, but you will void the warranty.
I just think because the iPhone is easily cracked, that they worry about there being a virus or program that could take down the network. I can go either way on this. I just think it would have been better for Jobs to not say anything and deal with the issue if it ever came up.
My iPhone is the greatest thing I've ever owned. I'd marry it if I could.
