Question about eggs for people in Europe

Doing some reading on eggs came across the following:

"The European Union has agreed to ban the use of conventional, barren battery cages by 2012. No newly built battery cages will be allowed from 2003, and from that date the space allowance in existing conventional cages will be increased from 450 cm2 to 550 cm2 per bird."

Specifically:

"Beginning in 2004, a new labelling program will be introduced in the European Union that will identify the method of production:

‡ Battery eggs will be labelled as "Eggs from caged hens"
‡ Free-run and other barn eggs will be labelled as "Barn" eggs
‡ Free-range eggs will be labelled as "Free Range" eggs
‡ Organic eggs will be labelled as "Organic" eggs"

Are your eggs labeled in the above manner?
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

  • I don't know about the first two because I only buy free range eggs anyway. It makes me feel sad to see the chickens squished in together. :(

  • I don't normally buy eggs very often but they're definitely labelled organic or free range. I haven't noticed barn or caged but that's not to say there aren't some labelled that way.
