Drinking to drown your sorrows apparently only locks them in place...

"The age-old belief goes that alcohol helps people drown their sorrows, but in truth the bottle only makes bad memories linger, a Japanese study said Friday.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo concluded that ethanol -- an intoxicating agent in alcohol -- does not cause memory to decrease, as widely believed, but instead locks it in place."
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

George Jones knows this by experience. And so do about 1 M other country singers.

Here's a toast to country drinkin' songs!
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

im not one to drink in order to 'drown my sorrows'. when i drink tis to get plastered. to feel worse than i already am. simple. has nothing to do with forgetting or trying to forget.
    hear my name
    take a good look
    this could be the day
    hold my hand
    lie beside me
    i just need to say

Well, I suppose only till the point you black out.

Thank god, cause there were a couple chicks in college that I don't mind forgetting. :D

  • To forget something you dislike, it's best to overwrite the negative memory with a positive memory at an early stage and leave out drinking alcohol," Matsuki advised.

    This explains soooooooo much. :)

I wonder if I got drunk and studied Microbiology if I would remember it better?

Yeah, I drank a TON in college and it's amazing how much I actually don't remember. :p

If drinking helped memory, we'd never drink again because we'd have a vivid recollection of our hangovers. We'd actually stick to the foolish promises we make to ourselves while hungover about never drinking again. I, for one, am gald this finding is way, waaaaaaaaay off base.

    Here's to my next hangover!
