Any sprout freaks in here?

Was doing some reading yesterday on the health benefits of enzymes and growing your own sprouts from various sources.

i.e. http://www.naturalnews.com/023226.html

It makes sense to me that this would be a very healthy thing to do for yourself.

So anyhow I decided to pick up some raw organic lentil and mung beans today on the way home, which are soaking now.

Anyone do this, and have some tips, favorites, recipes, etc..

I LOVE sprouts, but have never attempted to grow my own.
Let me know how it goes, because I think it sounds intriguing.

I youtubed some vids and it's apparently it's super easy. All the sprouter's recommend you do it at home to get the peak benefits out of it, and it's really inexpensive.

Just looking at that article, it sounds like the holy grail of health and longevity.

Makes sense to eat something exploding with new life like that. The chemical transformation and nutrient multiplication process taking place is quite impressive.

here's one vid....kinda funny but to the point.

I don't have that special lid, so I'm using some cheese cloth and an elastic band.

I post back with my gourmet review ...hehe

i have been eating them for years.....also worked for a small company, sweetwater sprouts, while in college.

sprouts replaced lettuce on my sandwiches.

    I sprout! :D

They're great for you, and give you some good enzymes.
I just use a clear glass jar and a mason jar lid and some cheesecloth or a piece of screen. Cover the beans with filtered water overnight, then drain the next day. Then rinse once a day so you don't get botulism or other nasties,,, and eat!

I go to the natural food coop and get raw peas, beans, seeds instead of buying sprouting kits. Garbanzo beans are really good, as are raw sunflower seed sprouts. Flax seeds, wheat and barley are great, too. Just buy raw seeds, not roasted.
I work at a brewery every once in a while, and when some uncooked barley comes in, I grab some and sprout it. Haha,,, well, the barley is even better after it's cooked and fermented and kegged, but I guess that's a subject for a different thread. :)

Edit: I just ran down and took a pic of my sophisticated sprouting system. :D
They're mung beans I put out this morning. You can get'm cheap at an Asian market if you have any near you.

    Slice of avocado
    Slice of tomato
Slice of cheese (something on the sharp side)
    Load of sprouts

Oh and they are great in quesadillas and on top of pizza. :)
If you juice, throw them in your juicer. I need one. :(

Also, you can make hummus out of them. Or add them to your homemade hummus. :)

    Sunshine burgers are the BEST!

I just transferred into the jars with cheese cloth today and rinsed. You can do flax? I have a ton of organic golden flax seeds. I was going to say those look like mung beans in your pic, then I read it. I'm trying mung as well, with lentils, also red and black beans but not sure about the last two flavor wise. Wheat berries are supposed to taste like watermelon I was reading, so I have to find some. I have the exact same setup, same jar, using the lid with the cheese cloth. We think alike.

Great tips thanks! I'm going to try all that you suggested.

Exactly what I was looking for.

I picked up this sprout medly/salad at my local farmer's market yesterday (combo of: clover, radish, sunflower greens, broccoli, peas, lentils, and fenugreek).

Talk about GOOD! Oh man. So many flavors, so many textures...
    Yum-o! :)

I do something very similar....except I use a sprouted grain roll, and vegan cheese. I LOVE THE SUNSHINE BURGERS!

I wouldn't call myself a sprout freak, but I like them. I have sprouted wheat though, and using the sprouts, together with the water they sprouted in, in bread dough makes for very delicious bread. You can also dry the wheat sprouts in a low temp oven, grind them and use them as a mild sweetener.

Me too!!! I have been eating them since they were packaged in plastic wrap with a handwritten label! :p
Now they are getting all fancy with a cardboard box and different flavors.
    Stick to the original flavor.
I have never tasted anything like a Sunshine burger in my life.
    Yummy.

Ro- I have a girlfriend who has a friend that does this amazing mix of greens and sprouts and sells them, though it is here in CT. You should do a search in Canada and talk to the growers. Oftentimes the best advice comes from the horse's mouth. When you see him, ask him "Why the long face?"

This place is amazing. It's an institute where people with all kinds of illnesses go to take part in this program. You eat only greens and raw vegetables, sprouts, wheat grass, etc. If you read some of the testimonials you can see what kind of healing these foods can do. My Mom went to this place when she had cancer, but unfortunately it was too late. Some of the stories from other people that were there was pretty incredible.

I'm sure it's a great place, but unfortunately I think these places give people wrong ideas, beliefs and impressions far too often. I am very sorry to hear about your mom too. :(

I am a believer that if you treat your body well and treat it like the fine tuned mechanism it is then you can live a long healthy, happy life.
I work in cancer research and I see so many of our patients (once diagnosed) seeking "all natural, holistic, herbal, etc." therapies. I'm sorry but doing yoga, eating whole grains, and drinking pomegranate juice will do nothing once you've "reached that point". Will it help when you are healthy and young? Absolutely. But there comes a point when people have to turn to real medicine.
I work in the pharmaceutical industry, but only rely on their products if I absolutely have to. I'm not saying they don't always do as they say but I trust mother nature a bit more. Come that day where my body and mother nature lets me down I will turn to these products. The science is there, but I don't want to rely on it until I have to.
  • Thought I'd report back.

The lentils and Mung beans sprouted really well. Mung beans are tasty, lentils have a nice crispy texture with hint of green flavor, both are great in a salad. Black beans and red beans are now just staring to grow little tails, so is the flax. The flax seeds kinda gel as the oils come out., so they are harder to to drain. I'm thinking I'm not going to like the black and red beans, red beans have the highest antioxidant content of any food I believe, so I hope they taste ok.

Today I started adzuki beans (black mung beans), alfalfa (supposed to be the sweetest tasting), red quinoa, wheat berries, sunflower seeds, and green peas. Just realized the quinoa, and alfalfa might be a pita to drain...very tiny..

I think I'm official a sprout freak, I have 12 jars on the go now....lol

    It's so foolproof...and easy.

So far so good. I wish I had found this out years ago.

Super healthy....does it get any healthier?

    Nice going!

For even more health, try sprouted barley. I'm going to work an all nighter tonight to make two batches:
    1) Take barley, sprout it to let some enzymes develop which makes the sugars available.
    2) Let it dry
    3) grind up and heat it into a soup like texture
    4) drain and put in a tank, add yeast wait a week or two
    5) Drink!

Same stuff. Barley malt IS sprouted barley! :D
