Possums are great! Really! They are totally harmless, but like everything in nature has a purpose. Just don't ask me what it is, although I bet it is more beneficial than humans.

Once when I was young as my parents and I were driving home from somewhere we saw a dead possum in the road and something was crawling on it. I made my dad stop (I did (and still do) rescue things). It was a baby that had survived. His siblings were dead, but he had managed to crawl out of her pouch (they are marsupials - like kangaroos). I picked him up and raised him for a couple of months. Unfortunately he got sick and died and I don't know why because he had been so healthy. Coincidentally I had been sick too, but since there are very few diseases that are transmitted between possums and humans I doubt that I caused it. But I was very fond of him. His name was Possum George Jones.

Riding down the road one day................

I've got some big bastard possums in my neighborhood. They are ugly as hell. A while back one managed to get itself trapped in my garbage can. You know what it did. It played possum.

Actually....they are kinda of comical......prancing around with their big, fat and bald tails....they might ignore you for a few minutes when you encounter one.

The joke here in the Southern U.S. is "Why did the chicken cross the road??"
