smoke to your death

I was standing outside the hospital the other day with a older patient and he looked over at a group of smoker's standing over in their little designated smoking pit and started yelling "Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette - smoke, smoke, smoke yourself to death!!" You should have seen the reaction on their faces - it was priceless! Most of them looked at him like he was crazy with their jaws dropped open, but i couldn't help myself from laughing. I thought that someone might get upset, but didn't really care. I was thinking about all the patients I see at the hospital dying from lung cancer and those who are slowly losing their appetites and will to live.

And then there's a guy sitting in a chair beside his oxygen tank and just puffing away. Kids and families are walking by and there he is just puffing on that cig about a foot away from an oxygen tank - not a freakin' care in the world for the safety of others! It amazes me how people bow down to the nicotine and let it enslave their souls and alter their lifestyles. I appauld that elderly patient for speaking his mind and hope that maybe a few people would take his words to heart (maybe consider that they are killing themselves and need to make a change). If it takes calling them out in front of a large group of people - then I say why not use embarrashment as a tool to help them quit. Its just like when I'm driving downtown and I see the guy walking in or out of the porno store and I start laying on the horn and waving like he's my best friend or someone I know really well. Use embarrashment to make people want to change what they are doing.

  • People smoking outside of the hospital just amaze me... You see people in wheelchairs with oxygen and and IV, puffing away...

I can understand to a degree when young healthy smokers ignore the facts that it will kill you... at 20 years old, you seem invincible to everything. But when you are seeing the results of smoking first hand, wouldn't you quit.

  • it's safe to say the TS does things that others do not like or appreciate. perhaps the TS would enjoy a group of people following him / her around and pointing out what they feel are his / her flaws. leave people alone to go about their business. maybe the exhaust fumes from your car you're driving when you honk your horn aren't appreciated by some people. maybe they will set fire to your car and laugh at you.

That's the one way I have not tried quitting yet. You can meet me at the corner of 51st and 5th and start following me. I will be heading to the EV show tonight, but do not have an extra, so you can wait for me outside and then it's on to NJ.

Honking at the guy leaving the porno store - is for fun - i just like to see people scramble to their car or put their heads down to hide their face.
Just for laughs - watching porn doesn't kill anyone but inhaling toxic chemicals into your lungs tends to slowly suffocate you to death!

I think that if you have a problem with me or someone else pointing out your nicotine addiction - then you can shove it - BECAUSE IT AFFECTS ME! the smoke pollutes the air I breathe and some dumbass smoking with oxygen on while kids are playing in front of him - IS AFFECTING OTHERS!! when you smoke in your own residence or away from me - I don't care. When you are in my personal space or affecting me - that's when I draw the line!

I say fuck that miserable old prick. Who the fuck is he to be yelling anything at strangers?

Its my God given right to smoke cigaretts, pot, crack, toad skin, bananna peels, whatever the hell I want. Righteous ass. And, I know its bad for me. The last thing I need is some old bitter dying asshole yelling at me for it.

Do you drive by McDonalds or bakeries and make oinking sounds?

    Leave people alone.

Second, what the fuck are you doing beeping at people coming out of porn shops. Its their business, not yours. You ejnoy embarrasing people? If yes, thats pretty sad.

I would bet the people this miserable old cogger yelled at were in the smoking section, which is down by the dumpster out of view. If not, then you are right in saying they were disrespectful.

What if I'm on the street first and you walk into MY personal space while I'm smoking a cig?

You sound kinda self-righteous to me, if we're being honest.
  • Wait. You mean to tell me that smoking it bad for me? Oh my god. I had no idea! I'm going to quit right now!

problem is, cigarette smoke does not stay withing your "personal space"...if it did, i am sure most people would not have a problem with it as many people don't have a problem with other people gorging themselves at mcdonalds-their food does not disrupt my personal space....

Well, you kinda set things off with this post.

    1. I think your point is "somewhat" valid. Showing people what will happen to them if they smoke ect. is probably a good thing. However, it should be done in a controlled environment. It's an addiction, so people are not just going to necessarily stop.... even if they want to.

    2. I grew up thinking guilt was a good thing. By your post, I'm assuming you think it is. I believe guilt can serve a purpose. But, I also think it can be dramatically overdone. When someone is pushing guilt onto someone... they are creating a right and wrong, and saying that said person is wrong. I believe that there is a right and a wrong in the grand scheme of things,... No doubt. However, I don't think having anyone sit on their soapbox and scream it to someone else will necessarily change their mind. Moreover, that person most likely has some flaws they should be addressing.

*****The objective IMHO is to take the large plank out of your own eye before go trying to remove the speck from your brother's eye.******

    3. Therefore, as you go by people going in and out of the adult store, I certainly hope you aren't going home and doing anything you... yourself.... would frown upon someone else doing. Only you and God can judge that. But, if you do engage in any activities that harm your body or your soul, I hope that you can look in the mirror and accurately call yourself what you are.... a hypocrite.

if someone is in the room with you, thats one thing. even in the same house......but, if someone is outside, where there is nowhere else to go but up to outer space, what is the problem? where would you rather smokers go?

and, I find the mcdonals smell highly offensive. Doesnt stop me from eating it, but it does smell rank. stinks up your car, office, etc...

the first part is what most of us would refer to as someone simply being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole. if you enjoy that and are comfortable with being an asshole...good for you.

...and you driving your car with exhaust fumes coming out pollutes as well. people walking on the sidewalk have to breathe in your pollutants and you are invading their space. you're doing the same if not worse than others who smoke. hypocritical.

When i talked to the man dying with lung cancer last week - he said "I remember everyone telling me to quit and preaching to me to stop, but I didn't listen. And oh god i wish i had - now all those words come back and haunt me with every painful breath that I take. If I only had made better choices...............(wipes away tears) I love my family and I have done something to myself that hurts them terribly and has placed me in this hospital to die at an early age."

This man was 38 YEARS OLD when he shared this with me. I watched his 60 year old mother stand outside the room crying and holding his heartbroken teenage son when he died YESTERDAY -
you want to talk about hypocrites and those who think their actions do not affect others. You want to call me a prick -that's fine. You'll remember my words one day and I hope for your sake that you are the only one that has to suffer for the choices you made.

You know, it's great that this guy shared that with you. Must've been hard for him. But I'm not going to pat you on the back for thinking that it's OK to judge people.

Do you drink? Do you eat shitty restaurant foods or greasy burgers on occasion? Do you or have you ever used any drugs or smoked a cigarette? Do you skydive or bungee-jump or any other sutff like that. Point is, we ALL do things that can have an effect on other people. You could get in a car wreck tomorrow and lose your life and your family would be heartbroken... doesn't mean you're going to stop driving to work.

Judge not lest ye be judged. That's the bottom line. It doesn't matter how many Reader's Digest or Chicken Soup for the Hypocrite's Soul missives you post, you're still passing judgement on people for doing something you don't agree with.
  • Both my parents were smokers.
As far as passive smoking is concerned, I don't believe it. I've come from a family of smokers and they've all died from old age, heart attacks or something called Amaloidosis. (If anyone wants to argue with this, you then have to argue with why you drive cars and pollute my airspace).

Both my parents were smokers but I didn't start until I was 26. (A couple of years ago). ...So it was entirely my decision. My brother doesn't smoke at all. It seems to me that cancer and death depends on the situation and the people which doesn't really give an accurate reading of the damage smoking can do.

Give over. Nobody'll remember your words "one day", it's not an original ruse to try and send smokers on a guilt trip y'know.

Smokers are 4x more likely to have a heart attack

Smokers are 2-1 to develop heart disease, or a smoking related disease of equal proportions

Smokers die earlier than non smokers ( proven fact )

    Cigarette smoke stinks

Its NOT cool to smoke anymore

Which is why I quit ....

  • Hey, if you're gonna die, you're gonna die. The judgmental stuff is very annoying. Now, if somebody is being rude with their habit, that's completely different.
And whoever said something about fast food and drinking, kudos.

    And just a side note...
I've know people in their eighties who smoked their entire adult life and they never had problems. I've known people who smoked for a year and came down with something. I, personally, think food has more of an affect on a person than smoking, but then again, that's just me.
