Mad!

my dad is in a nursing home,
he has a spinal cord injury after a car accident

physically he's doing much better, he can walk on his own with a walker!

but he can't go home yet b/c he'd need 24 hr care
Medicare stopped paying b/c he finished his physical therapy goals

and he has a worker's comp case pending b/c he was hurt while working (he was a taxi driver)

He wanted to go to another nursing home closer to where he lives in Queens, but they won't take him without a pre-authorization from worker's comp.

he's 74 yrs old, btw,

and so the nursing home strong-armed him into having to sign over his Soc.Sec checks to pay for it while he's there, or else they threatened to sue him.
I mean I understand they have to get paid
but that is so bogus, he works his whole life, he gets older, he gets hurt,
and it's like nobody cares about 'patient care', it's like 'screw you, we're taking your money

b/c my brother (who is ill also) lives in their apt and that's what pays for the maintenance! My brother doesn't have enough income coming in to pay the payments, the utilities and everything
it's a total mess

Gosh darnit, it sucks. :(

I am just venting,

if you have something negative to say, please keep it to yourself b/c I'm not in the mood.

Thank you.

I haven't seen it but I've heard about it,
I'm not a Michael Moore fan

and I agree. That's what my Mom said too, in other countries (like Canada! and Australia!) they have subsidized health care but not here. Here if you get older and don't have either good insurance or a lot of money, it's not cool.

Hi, Allie. I feel your pain. Really. My mom took a fall at the beginning of the year - what a nightmare. Hospital to rehab, then because she "plateaued," suddenly the state stopped paying and they were ready to boot her out, only she couldn't go home by herself and my brother looked into assisted living - what a ripoff. You're right, everything you work for your whole life and yes, people need to be paid, but it's like they're totally trying to screw you over. Of course your father should go to a nursing home closer to where he lives - grrr, now I'm mad, too.

(My mom's story has a sad ending - she passed away, but she was much older than your father and her health turned horrible - so in a lot of ways, it was sort of a blessing. But - yuck.)

I will cross my fingers for you. Somebody has got to fix this fucked up health care system.

I hope this isn't a negative post. Your father is lucky he has people around him who care about him.

it is good news but it's hard to stay focused when you have to deal with all the drama about finances
it always comes down to money

oh absolutely, money is the biggest headache of all it seems! and it seems with insurance and all that, they kick you when you're at your lowest/weakest point.

speaking as someone that has had more than a few insurance-related battles...just keep on fighting! the most important thing in the end is your dad's health, everything else will get sorted out somehow i am sure

it is extremely difficult for adult children to deal with the aging parent(s). my father had a good retirement income so neither he nor my mother ever spent much time in a nursing home or rehab environment.

my mother died in 1995, and my father in 2005. both of my parents died at home.

i was able to care for my father in his final years. it was at once both impossible and rewarding. i have no regrets.

do what you can when you are able.

i wish the best for yourself, your brother and your father.
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

you would think his health is must important but people stay calling ME about how are his bills going to be paid? I was like, what do you want me to do, cut you a check?
If I had any money he would have been gone from there

    dumb asses
they're really stupid over there. I am a social worker and the sw there is just, wow. He told my dad he couldn't call workers comp for him, he or I had to do it, b/c he didn't want to be bothered
and then he said he didn't have the date of the accident
but he didn't think to call ME? Duh. I've complained to the director several times.

Sorry for your dad and I hope things get better for your family.
Just be glad that you're still in contact with your father and family.

My mother is finally visiting her family back in Cambodia for the first time since the mid-70's when Vietnam War and Cambodian Civil War broke out. My mother was only 16 or 17 and it was a miracle that she even survived because nearly 2 million civilians died during the Khmer Rouge -which was overlooked by the Vietnam War.

I'm so happy for her visit since it's been over 30 since she fled home. I myself have never even met my grandfather but hopefully I will soon. Family is first because they're always there for you during times of need.

hope I didn't sound too vain and anything like that. It's tough dealing with family crisis like that. I'm not sure what's harder, knowing your family member is in a trouble situation or not knowing them/not being able physically be there for them.
