Jamaica Plain looks run down, and many people will tell you it's "ghetto". Welllll they dunno wtf's up :P JP rules. At least 3 of my top 10 bars in the city are there. There's a great place to drink and bowl candle pin style with old wooden balls...most charming thing ever. There's also plenty of great little shops, restaurants of all kinds, lesbians and art freaks walking around, etc...it's just awesome.

PM me if you want more specifics

Hahaha! JP is not ghetto! I am currently looking to get an apt or buy a condo there!

You want ghetto! Come to where I live now! Sunny ole Roslindale! Hhahaha. (it's getting better I swear!)

Philly has it's charms, but you gotta be really gritty to like it imo.
real gritty? oh lord, give me a break.

it's a matter of what you want to do. there's plenty to see here in philly for a few days... walk around south street, check out all of the historic stuff in old city or the art museum (which is awesome inside and out). if you're into shopping there's walnut/chestnut streets or manayunk.

i love boston but the way people are talking about philly...it's not that scary, i promise!

Agreed to all of the above! Philly is not as bad as its reputation. There is plenty to do in the city. Keep in mind, its the birthplace of our country, we have Independence Hall, The Constitution Center, Liberty Bell, etc.

South Street is cool, and if you are looking more upscale, there is always the Main Line.

I've partied in West Philly in my younger days and I came out unscathed.

Every city has its ups and downs. Besides, if you go to Boston, you'll have to deal with their egotistical fans. ;)

Best bet for a hotel would be to snag a deal on hotwire.com prolly.

But personally, I like to rent people's apartments when I travel to major cities:

There's usually a few listings that are under $100/night, and they're typically in cooler areas than hotels. Plus, the people you rent from will usually give you tons of great insight & recommendations.

I'm a white person who's a college graduate with a master's degree and I'm a little too poor to even consider myself middle class. Fortunately my parents raised me to not make generalizations of cities or travel opinions based on my race.

    anybody else? thanks! next.....

Here's my thing. Being from MA and being able to hit Boston on a regular basis (my mom lives in the Charlestown Navy Yard and I have a standing Thirsty Thursday night date with her every week), I love Boston. Got to see them tug-boat the USS Constitution out last Friday, lots of cool history, good times on some pub crawls.

BUT! I've never been to Philly to do the tourist/history thing so I lean towards suggesting Philly to you. I know there are some Philly folks on here that could suggest cool stuff to do.

Hit me up if you're headed to Boston, I'll meet you for a drink!

I live in/around Boston...been to Philly...I also go to NYC about 5 times a year. (just to give ya an idea of where I'm comin' from)

Definitely go to Boston, not Philly. Philly has it's charms, but you gotta be really gritty to like it imo. The food in Boston is also waaay better if that matters to you. You said you're poor, so I wouldn't waste yer time w/ Fenway & other touristy jumble...unless you're a HUGE baseball fan. Then you should at least get a look @ the park.

Now a poor-peep's guide to Boston...

    1. Stay out of downtown, Faneuil Hall, Back Bay, and Fenway areas. They are expensive and generally soulless.

    2. Stick to Jamaica Plain and Central Square in Cambridge. Both are easily accessible via the trains, and they're still thriving imo. Coming from NYC, I think you'd feel most comfy and have a blast in these areas.

Central Square has 2 awesome music venues, a cheap improv theatre, and some great authentic Irish pubs.

Jamaica Plain looks run down, and many people will tell you it's "ghetto". Welllll they dunno wtf's up :P JP rules. At least 3 of my top 10 bars in the city are there. ok.....we must hit your top 10 bars soon. I smell a pub crawl.....

I would say Boston. I used to work in Philly all the time and I never really liked it. It is EXTREMELY humid in the summer (even more so than boston!) and there are a lot of very run-down neighborhoods, some of which are dangerous. there seemed to be only a small area of the city that was actually some place you want to hang out and enjoy.

Boston is really nice. the architecture and the river are very beautiful. you can also walk around every easily, and most areas are very safe.

hmm, don't know about it specifically, but if it is on Boylston, I would venture to say it's pretty good.

  • The Copley area is sweet. If you don't like it, just hit the green line or walk anywhere. It's such a good area to be in.

For transportation, staying in that area is good because you got access to both Green & Orange lines...plus cabbies actually know where Copley is in case you have to take one (which I would avoid at all costs, but after 1am it's kinda necessary). Again imo, Back Bay/Copley is pretty touristy/culture-less, but it makes sense for logistical purpz.

Also--it's easy to walk across the Mass Ave bridge into Cambridge (if you like walking, I guess one could take the No.1 bus).

and, I would slightly disagree with your description of the back bay. Boylston, yes, maybe. But I think people from out of town would really like Newbury, which has great "bostony" architecture and it is close to the public garden and the common.
