Does This Sound Like a Scam?

Okay so I've been looking for some part-time work, and I found a position on HotJobs! that would pay me $3000 a month. Not bad for part-time work that doesn't require me to leave the house.

I've been talking with this guy Jeff Krepner about the position, and from what he told me, he works over in Germany. World Rentals is the company, and they have foreign properties they rent to United States citizens. They have no United States offices, but would like to open one within the next 12 months.

So what my main responsiblity would be is to check the prices of housing units across the US (they would give me specifics for each assignment--4 four rooms, 3 baths, etc.). I need to do 100 units per assignment, and then report to them the average price for that location, plus other details such as if pets are allowed or if it is a non-smoking building and what the parking situation is like. Real basic stuff. I can obtain the information any way I want (internet, phone, paper, walk in if it's in my area, whatever works). I'd have to do that twice a week.

A secondary responsiblity which I find a little fishy, is that sometimes I would have to play middle man for rent payments. The client would pay me into my account, and I'd get a whopping 1% commission, and then wire it across seas to their office at their expense. I would of course not use my personal account and would open a new one specifically and only for this position.

That's pretty much the job. I have a feeling it's a scam because I can't find really anything about the company online. And I don't understand why they would need a US citizen to do work someone from Germany could easily do. $3000 a month for doing minimal work does sound good though.

What do you all think?

I want to say there's minimal chance that is legit. Ask HotJobs to look into it.

I'd be very careful of the bank account too. Could be money laundering/tax avoidance, etc. Make them set up their own account. :)

Anything that involves you using your bank account or paying them in any way is a scam. I wouldn't trust anything overseas without an office in the US either.

I just find it odd that a scam could find it's way to HotJobs. That's the only reason I took any of it with a grain of salt. I'm gonna have HotJobs look into it because, and especially after all these responses, I'm sure it's not legit now.

that much money for a part-time job?! seems to good to be true...therefore, i concur w/ everyone else...be careful! and it seems like the job that they're asking to be done, they could almost do themselves for the most part via the internet.

    exactly

all they'd have to do is search the rentals on craigslist for any city/town/local area to get the answers..the most they'd have to do is perhaps send a few e-mails to get any answers that aren't covered in the craigslist ad

    It is a scam.

What they are doing is stealing other people's bank information. They will then hack their accounts, wire money into your account, and you wire it overseas. I've seen this done before. It happened to a client of mine..money stolen from his bank account, deposited in someone else's account, and then sent overseas where someone walked off with the money.

You will be on the hook for this.

Here's a good message board to ask about most any scam. Just don't listen to the posters who have only 1 post b/c they typically work for the company in question.
