'Sean is the name for a man or a woman
And it describes a writing utensil
    or a federal prison

    Put the two together
and I'll tell you what he isn't...
    just another
    just another
    just another
    just another
    bad acting hack

His Dad worked in the movies
and his brother Chris did too
    So I have to admit
that there's a bit of nepotism
    but in this case...cool!

    His other brother plays guitar
but he didn't write this song
but if he want's to sing it I'll let him
coz it's about his brother Sean

I met him once and I have to say
my view of him has risen
Over the years I've developed good taste
and I'll tell you what he isn't...
    just another
    just another
    just another
    just another
    bad acting hack

I liked him as a surfer
I liked him as an addict
I liked him as a prisoner on the run
teaming up with Robert De Niro and wearing a habit
I liked him as a lawyer on coke
he really seems to inhabit his roles
    even when he plays
    a killer on death row

I met him once and I have to say
my view of him has risen

Over the years I've developed good taste
and I'll tell you what he isn't...
    just another
    just another
    just another
    just another
    bad acting hack

    just another
    just another
    just another
    just another
    sad sack
    rat pack
    crack head
    fat cat
    sucking cock on Hollywoods lap
    bad acting hack'

    I actually quite like it.

I'm sure he didn't intend it to be the next 'Black'.
I'm also sure that he'd cringe if he knew someone had typed out the lyrics on the internet!

who woulda EVER thunk that spicoli would turn into such a brilliant actor/director? :p

the crossing guard is probably my fave amongst em....and as an actor 21 grams is perfection. of course, i find all his directing work and more recent acting work to be above par.

Didn't he direct Mystic River too?

Honestly, I thought the editorial choices, the editing, music and photography were what made Into the Wild so good so yeah I agree with you. He's a great director.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

Penn is a tremendous director and a so-so, sometimes pretty good actor.

that would be totally cool. you are always welcome out to the dreamn abode....penn flicks....red wine....popcorn....sounds great! sounds like a plan! of course, we also should go and eat at pure food and wine this time too - the raw foods place i raved about. we could do the acting and/or directing run.....be a long night either way!

I thought "Into The Wild" wasn't that good actually. It was more a glorified series of montages than something with an actual plot that interested me. I also thought that Vedder's songs didn't work at all. On their own they are great but that film seemed a bit messy.

aah m. if red wine is involved then food is incidental. ;):) i think a select viewing of penn acting would amount of 5 movies. starting with fast times and ending wth mystic river. what comes in between is up to you girl. but no carlitos way... the hairdo throws me. :D

well i didn't necessarily mean the same evening, haha. 5 movies still is a LONG night! ahhhhh...fast times....must we? :D and ha on carlito's way...forgot about that one! i may have to watch that on my own then, been a long time for that flick too. :p

as far as his directing, i always found it somewhat interesting that he had jack nicholson star in 2 of his flicks. to me, that would signify some serious respect on nicholson's part for penn's work. just a thought.

eastwood is a terrible director, his movies are utterly over rated boring drivel.

my thoughts too....i though sean did a great job on itw and with each movie he directs he will get better....kinda like clint....although clint was a good director with his first movie (play misty for me)...he's just become more seasoned :)

I felt sure of that too! Haven't seen of his directorial films then, but sure think of him as an intense actor. Looks to me like a bad-tempered fucker.

Also, as far as acting goes, he was superb in...

    'The Assassination of Richard Nixon'

and 'I Am Sam' - arguably his best performance yet.

Anyway, this thread is about his Directing.
My favourite film of his is 'The Indian Runner'. Great film and a great soundtrack.
