My friends and I will be driving from LA to Mansfield this summer. I know that many of you have traveled to see PJ. Can u guys give us some survival tips, advice, recommendations for places to stop at, knowledge of changing laws by state, etc. I have a little anxiety about traveling in car so far way so maybe some of your responses will make me feel a better. Thanks guys.

Honestly, go buy a CB radio and listen to the truckers. Not only will you laugh all day listening to them, but they give the heads up on traffic, where cops are hiding, weather, you name it. Don't stop in Iowa either, there's nothing but corn for hundreds of miles.

Flying is no fun. Go out and see the country!! Road trips are the best. Granted the drive back will be a bastard, I guarantee.

thats awesome I drove from Albany to Lolla last year (like 12 hours), but your drive will be much long and more rewarding. You should plan it so you can make some sweet stops along the way. Have fun road trips rule!!!

traveling with friends is a big test! ... ya really find out what peeps are like ...

where/when to stop depends on your time, interests and money ... i would myself plan a camping trip through some of the nat'l parks ... cheap and they're awesome ... park pass gets your whole car in free - just have to pay for camp fees ...

in any case - try not to sweat the small stuff ... be flexible - those are my trips for a long road trip!

I can't even comprehend being in a car that long. I'm driving from Cleveland to Virginia Beach and I thought that was long! (9 hours)

I would get satellite radio. I would also try to stop at some of the major cities if you have time...you never know if you will be able to make it back to some of them.

Depending on what route you take, though I think will need to take Highway 40 at some point, stay out of downtown Kansas City at night. I drove to Mississippi before senior year of high school and took a wrong turn; wound up driving through what was the equivelant of South Central Los Angeles at about 1:30am. If it weren't for a good hearted citizen telling me to get out of town as fast as I could I'm sure there would have been a few snags. Like loss of blood, bruises, frequent unconciousness or death.

    Have fun :)

Drove cross country with 3 buddies while in college, 1984... Left NYC July 5 and had to be back by like August 2th for a Springsteen show at Giants Stadium...

New York, Memphis, New Orleans, Houston, Dallas, Amarillo, Santa Fe, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, San Diego, LA (Malibu and Huntington Beach really), Big Sur, Pebble Beach, San Fran, Sacramento, Reno, Yellowstone and the Tetons, Devils Tower, Badlands, Chcago and then all the way back...
