When a great idea is shot down...

So I had a great idea this afternoon.. something which was going to give me some sense of direction for the near future, and I was really excited about it.. so I shared it with someone. I was sure they would be as excited as I was.. I shared it excitedly, thinking they'd know EXACTLY why this would really suit me. And they were lukewarm to say the least.. They had their own ideas.. 'Well, it isn't really you, is it?' How do they fucking know? And now I'm back at square one.

Does anyone else hate getting shot down?

I hear ya', but how do you know it was a great idea if it never came to fruition? I mean, I've had tons of what I thought were great ideas at the time but thankfully a sober person came along and talked some sense into me...

In other words, what's the idea?

me too. He/she was probably jealous of your idea and is thinking of ways that they can manipulate it and turn it into their own.

Experiences in the last 6 months have really made me consider whether I'd like to train to be a councellor.. It just hit me this afternoon that I should go for it. I was positive that my family would know EXACTLY why I want to do this.. but the only response I got was 'Hhmmmm.... Well, is it really you? It doesn't really use your talents does it? Well, the important thing is that you're having ideas.... keep having ideas, you're doing great.' Fucking patronising shit, basically. I really wanted people to know why I was so enthusiastic about this, and for those who REALLY KNOW me, the reasons are plain as day. My mum keeps saying 'Do something with your art', which is all well and good, but it's not that simple... 'Something with art' isn't really a job description I've heard of, and besides, you need degrees these days.. and even people with degrees find they have to work in a bar because there aren't any jobs.

Obviously, we have never met, but from your posts I would agree that you are on to something. I think you could really help others out who are struggling. People want to know that the person they are talking to knows something about real problems. Not suggesting you have real problems, I just think you could relate well...

There's an old saying that goes something like that. I think it goes: 'It's probably better to have tried something and failed than to regret not giving it a chance'. :D:confused:

Oh Mark, I totally get you on this. My parents are CONSTANTLY saying "why don't you work in art, why don't you follow through with your art work, blah blah blah". Yes, its true, I have a BFA in Drawing and Painting, but also, its a hard market to paint pictures for a living. My parents don't see that, or from how they speak, don't care. Its like, I like to do something so my life should revolve around it. ARGH! I also decided to become a teacher. I got so many eyes rolled at me. My own mother was like "you don't even like kids, you don't even want to be a mother".. (Because being a teacher is exactly like being a mother??) Anywhoo.. you know I was like, dude, where is the support here. I know I'd make a great teacher, I don't know why everyone got so hung up on it. But you know what? I took that crappy reception and I used it as fuel. I have been working with kids for 2 years now, and I start graduate school to get my masters of elementary education in September. It was my little "fuck, that.. watch me go far with my idea"...

You can do anything you want, and you know yourself best. I say do it, do whatever makes you happy, and to the people that want to bring you down, misery loves company, and maybe they need to follow some passion in their life.

Wow. Thankyou. Sounds like you know exactly what this feels like..

It's not that I needed their approval - it's just depressing that it's these things that make you realise that people don't know you quite as well as you thought. I was so certain that my family would 'get' this..

  • don't let that change your plan!!!

I mean if it's a great idea to you then who are they to tell you that it "isn't you" to do???

Totally understand. Its like you see this as almost a calling, and then its such a slap in the face when no one else things you'd be awesome at it. Welcome to my life. Oh well.. prove them wrong so the can look back and get it!

You know, Mark, I gotta ask what kind of counseling gig were you thinking? Seeings as how many "I'm pissed and my willy is showing through my pants" threads you've started it may be something you want to consider.

"Yes. Dr. Mark, I've been having terrible relationshipis with all of my family for as long as I can remember."

"Have you met my colleague, Dr. Guiness?"

The only counselor I could ever relate to when I was a full-blown psycho was another dude who had been through some similar shit... That's what I was trying to say in a previous post...

Were you just looking for approval or their agreement? Or did you actually want their opinions? Do you think they are right, or are you just angry because the response you got wasn't the one you wanted?

If you think it's THAT great of an idea, you wouldn't let people stop you, and you wouldn't be back to square one, as it were. If you're that sure that it's something you'd be good at, then you wouldn't let what anyone else said change your mind on the subject.

Sounds to me as though they have put some doubt in your mind about this idea, which means you weren't 100% sure about it to begin with, which means maybe it wasn't such a great idea, and you needed someone to tell you. Then again, maybe it's a great idea, but you never know unless you do it.

Sometimes being shot down isn't a bad thing. We all have stupid ideas (i'm not saying this is one) that we think are brilliant, and it's better to hear from someone beforehand that it's stupid than to follow it through and find out that way.

What was my point? I'm not sure  I think it was that, if you REALLY think it's a good idea and something you would be good at, then don't let what other people say change your mind on it.

I agree completely... well said Dave. Mark, I'd say a good chunk of us have had an idea shot down at some stage in our lives. I've had my fair share of them. Usually I think 'the fuckers' and I get annoyed at them for 'ruining my dream' but looking back, if it was REALLY what I wanted to do I woulda said 'what the fuck do THEY know? Let them sort out their OWN lives'. I've recently figured out what I wanna do :) and this idea feels different to the rest... cos I KNOW it's right... it's not just an idea, when I thought of it, it was like a lightbulb was hovering just above and to the right of my head. Anyone I've mentioned it to think it's great... if they didn't I'd think 'you're just trying to steal it... or you're jealous... either way, it's what I wanna do and I'm doing it'. So now you need to decide Mark... do you take their negativity and give up and accuse them of 'ruining your dream' (just think of how ridiculous that sounds) or do you go with your idea and at least TRY to make it work? You're an adult, not a 16 year old talking to your career guidance teacher. It's completely up to you... nobody else is gonna live your life for ya.
