I'm doing a course which will qualify me to teach English to non-speakers.

I have an assignment due tomorrow which asks me to find a short piece of writing for Entry 2 speakers and design a lesson around it involving a reading task.

Does anyone have any ideas how long a piece of writing I should choose, and what kind? It can't be too difficult and it can't be too easy.

Thanks!

For English as a second language, Entry 2 level would still be very simple. A few sentences but I would say no longer than half page or so, not too complex grammar. Decide what your lesson will be (ie the use of certain verbs, learning time, colours...) Then, focus on a subject, for example the weather or going to the market or something like that and slip in the key words relevant to your lesson.

Your reading task will obviously be comprehension, so your worksheet (if you have one), could include 'filling in the blanks', answering the questions or even a lil' crossword which includes the words in the text.

It's the kind of things I would have done when I was tutoring French. I also taught French as a foreign language to recent immigrants (when I was living in Belgium). My 'lessons' there were then much more 'hands on' for the people, i.e. the kind of things they needed to be able to read/write/understand/speak to just get by.

Not sure if this helps - I'm not an english teacher :o
