no offense, but are you polynesian? polynesian tattoos have ALOT of meaning behind them, they tell stories mostly about family, ancestors & heritage, but they also are very ritualistic. the age that you get them, even the way the tattoo is administered is EXTREMELY important, no needles here, they are literally carved into the the skin.

robbie williams did it & mike tyson got a maori design on his face which i think is just insulting. i just think it's disrespectful & cheapens something that is more about family, tribes & history than looking tough.

You make a good point which probably never occurred to most of us non-Polynesians. I'm sure no disrespect was meant by harmless. :(

no, i know :) living here in new zealand, polynesian cultures are a big part of our society, your bought up around their customs and beliefs & you just come to respect it like your own.

I like the beauty of the artwork, it's artistic in a way many other tattoo types are not. I consider getting something on one's face extremely derogatory. I consider getting a polynesian tattoo just because it looks 'tough' very insulting. I haven't done either. I did know all of that about Polynesian culture and tattoos, and I have utmost respect for it. That said, I see no reason why I, as a Western educated in art, cannot respectfully appreciate or wear their designs. They're lovely to look at, and I think that's a credit to polynesians.

EDIT: That said, my tattoo design is not directly lifted from anything Polynesian. It is a custom design and only inspired by Polynesian design.

Itsevobaby, I took into account your concerns and did some research.

'Koru' or swirls, as part of a Maori design, can be included in a tattoo which is specific to a tribe, family line or genealogy, and thefore 'sacred'. But the Koru does not have this significance by itself, only when included in a larger design. As my design consists of Koru themselves, I think I'm OK. I hope. Either way, the symbolism of the Koru is extremely relevant and meaningful to my own life so I'm happy that it coincides with my reason for having tattoos in the first place.

The New Zealand Airlines logo has two Koru on it. I'm interested, would this be considered offensive? We can't guarantee that the logo designer was Maori.

nah that's a bit different, being paint on a plane as opposed to ink in skin.

Well regardless, it's not like I've lifted off a Maori design from an individual Maori. This was independently designed; the problem comes when you're lifting off designs directly which are unique to another individual. This one isn't, it's just loosely inspired by a style. It's not copied. It's not directly Maori, despite including Koru. Unless the Maori have a monopoly on spiral designs, in which case I am regretful.

Looking good dude! Dunno shit about Maori so I'll stay out of the discussion above..

And not to be a dick, but aren't the outlines around the elements a bit (too) close / uneven at some places or is that swelling? As a graffiti artist, lines etc are things I look at in close detail.

Nope, they are a little uneven.. overall the design is great so it doesn't bother me too much. I'm not sure anything can be done other than making the lines thicker around the elements. Ah well.

If I understood correctly circles are hard to tattoo on skin / body. And indeed the overall design looks great, so I wouldn't dwell on it either. Is this the only part of ur body u got tattooed or is there more?

The links at the top of my 'ALL TATTOOS - NO CHAT' thread show my first tattoo, a large labyrinth on my left shoulder, so again, circular. It was done by the same guy that did this one and it's as perfect as I could hope for. But hey, maybe lightning doesn't strike the same way twice. ;)

Yeah, "my guy" (we all have "a guy" :D) wasn't too happy about doing circles, either.

Sometimes I watch Kat von D on TV and think maybe it'd be nice to have a girl for a change.

Aaaanyway... yeah, now I've got 3 tattoos I've become more of a perfectionist and my very first tattoo was pretty close to perfection. I think I'll either go to another place for my next one (there's a more renowned one around here, but it's further on the bus) or I'll go for something which doesn't involve circles. That said, it could be a LOT worse, I'm really happy. As has already been mentioned, the only worry is that a couple the lines are very close together. But hopefully they won't blur together any time soon.... *gulp*
