funny, that's quite an ignorant comment to make imo. i know many *highly intelligent* people as you call it, and yes......they are interested in making money. maybe not to be *obscenely rich*....but what difference does that make? personally i don't think *dumb* people make it rich, just people with different priorities perhaps.
that comment just rubbed me the wrong way - sounded VERY elitist imo.
hey, all I know is that the "wealthiest" (in terms of pure money made from pure business) people I know have high school diplomas, maybe a degree from some mediocre college. whenever I meet people who are in "money making" fields- business, finance, etc., they usually turn out not have the best education (or to not have really cared about it if they did). Of course this is not always the case- my boss is LOADED and has 2 phds, but I think he was loaded already and he made his money by using his education. You know, I think it should go without saying that no one here is ever not speaking in general terms. But the truth is you DON'T make a TON of money from being a scientist or professor of literature (or an architect as graysaturday mentioned). sure, educated professionals usually lead comfortable lives, but if you're talking about becoming obscenely rich, it's not the way to go. And here's the thing, and I think this sums up the point I am trying to make- you CAN'T be a scientist unless you are smart and educated, but ANYONE can make a lot of money in business, maybe by being smart and having "business accumen" but also they may just be lucky or be determined enough to make money.

hahahahahahahaha....whatEVER. that is one of THE most elitist statements i have read here, EVER. mediocre schools? hahahahaha. yes, b/c only if you went to a *top* school could you ever be intelligent. my father was offered a full scholarship to NYU, which he had to turn down to support his immigrant family b/c night school didn't exist back then. so yes, he had a HS diploma, and was one of the most intelligent men you could ever meet. i knoew TONS of truly intelligent people who NEVEr went to college, or *mediocre* schools as you put it, b/c one can get an excellent education even there, or on your own! education alone does NOT = intelligence. and most *dumb* business people will NOT go far. i know a couple of doctors who marginally *just* made it, and to converse with them...don't seem all that *smart*....but hey, whatever.............opinions are just like assholes eh?
anyhoooooo...this is entirely off-topic so i will refrain from this futile dialogue further.
bottomline, if one has the real DRIVE to be financially successful they most certainly can be, in america....and elsewhere.
btw - didn't our current moron president go to yale i believe?
