I was reading this thing the other week about how former Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca has this foundation in his wife's memory to help find a cure for diabietes. He believes that in the near future they'll find a cure for it. Well thats great and all, but then I thought about what Chris Rock said once in a comedy show about how there are no cures for diseases anymore, Dr.'s just help you to live with it. Like there hasn't been a true cure for an epic illness since Jonas Saulk helped to cure polio. I mean what do I know? But its like if they find a cure for these diseases like wipe out AIDS, Cancer, and Diabietes then I think drug companies would make less money, they'll make more over a persons lifetime if they continue to buy hte drugs to live. I could be wrong, but people keep saying, were so close to finding a cure, were so close to finding a cure, but they never find a cure. I dunno sorry if that pisses anyone in the medical community off, but its just a possible theory I had.

  • I could be wrong, and if i am please let me know. As far as I know there is only a polio vaccine?! not a cure. Many children in third world countries still suffer from polio, we have not "rid" the world from this disease! Vaccines are still being made and discovered-HPV for example...sometimes i think that is all that can be done, preventative measures......

right there isn't a cure for polio, just vaccines. and there were tons of new vaccines developed by the 1970s. In the 70s there were so many advances in vaccines people thought that infectious diseases would soon be eradicated completely, then AIDS came along. And you can't lump cancer and diabetes in together or with AIDS. AIDS is infectious- there would probably be a vaccine developed. Cancer you have to "cure" and diabetes (at least type 1) is genetic and type 2 is often behavioral.
  • I think the focus is to come out with more advanced ($$$) treatments and pour tons of cash into that avenue of R&D until a worse disease comes along...

I've been diabetic for over 20 years. Completely insulin dependent and you are 100% correct. There will NEVER be a cure. Too many companies make too much money off the treatments. Even as a patient, I have companies "courting" me to use their products whether it be insulin, syringes, delivery systems..............it's a competition, lots of money to be made.

Having lost two cousins to AIDS, I have to say that all of the research that has been done and drugs developed to help them live longer, more comfortable lives has worked to a great extent. My cousins lived for years with the disease, and lived very productive lives.

The disease eventually took them both. But having lived in the United States, they were afforded drugs that others in Africa, etc. are not.

I don’t know that they are “close to a cure” when it comes to AIDS, but I do know that their research and drugs have helped people.

It's unfathomable to think that if they did have a cure for any of these diseases that they would withhold that information so that drug companies could become rich off of people's suffering.

But then, I'm told I'm naive when it comes to stuff like that.
Don't come closer or I'll have to go

Don't you think billions in profits is enough of an incentive for greedy medical corporations to withhold a cure?

"It's about the bottom line." and "We have to look out for the investors." are two phrases we've all heard. It is a sick feeling to know that these both translate to mean that millions of people are investing in your disease.

Why would they want to find a cure when it's getting rid of people in an over populated world?!?! Sad YES, but there will not be any cures in our lifetime...or possibly ever!! :(

well, yeah, but I am going to school for a degree in medical billing for insurance companies and I am learning that there are a hell of a lot of conditions that we can come down with and that it is hard to pin point. My estranged husband had a stroke about 6 years ago and I just learned that if you take this certain medicine within 2 - 3 hours of the onset of a stroke, your symptoms are far less permament. In other words, you may have less things that stay with you afterward. But the hard part is that you need to find that you have this condition first. For a week he was treated for Guillian Barre.

I think it is hard to find the diagnosis a lot of times because of many reasons, like #1, I think that there are too many diseases and conditions, #2, there are too many things that our bodies can develop their own strains of these conditions even if you have a common disease (by common I mean something a lot of people have, not that it is not a serious one) and #3 that yes, yes, I am also curious to know whether or not some people who could be helping people by finding the cure and not do anything about it because there is huge money in illness. which is fucked up, I know.
But they can rest assured, as we all would agree that as soon as one thing gets cured, another disease will take its place. right?

i am an insulin dependant diabetic, for 37 years now. ( Type 1 ) .

I am also in the medical field and I work in a Hospital ( for over 15 years now ) .

I can see both sides of the fence on this,

Alot of the medical innovations and breakthrus are held back by govt and politics- along with all the moneymakers-- which totally sucks .

I agree with the theories about the Drug Companies as well.
