OK New Yorkers.... I have all 5 Simon & Garfunkel albums and the greatest hits. But would you consider S&G to be a sort of "sound of New York" Like when you hear them its like this is the soundtrack of the city? I'm so glad I can say I saw them live in Columbus Ohio when I was 20 in '03.

The only Simon and Garfunkel that makes me think of the city is Me and Julio down by the schoolyard, with "good bye to ..' what is it, Rosie, or Rosa? Queen of Corona? b/c that's in Queens..

but other than that, not so much...

good call on the Ramones, also Blondie (ie: Heart of Glass) Madonna's 1st album (ie: like the songs Holiday and Borderline) b/c she came to NYC to make it big,

the Beastie Boys (No Sleep Till Brooklyn)

Notorious BIG (tims for my hooligans in Brook-lyn) and whenever they play that "Where Brooklyn at?" intro

and I don't remember who does it but that rap: "Engine Engine #9, on the NY Transit Line..."
gosh even Frank Sinatra's New York New York makes me think of NY

oh and John Lennon's imagine b/c it makes me think of how he lived here with Yoko

that's all I can come up with off the top of my head

for me the 'soundtrack' depends on the year and what the hit songs are of the moment. and what season it is. like there is always a song of the summer...

This is the sound I can remember of NYC and Brooklyn when I lived there in 1976....Boz Scaggs....(Dirty) Lowdown

    Peace
*We CAN bomb the World to pieces, but we CAN'T bomb it into PEACE*...Michael Franti

*MUSIC IS the expression of EMOTION.....and that POLITICS IS merely the DECOY of PERCEPTION*
    .....song_Music & Politics....Michael Franti

*The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite INSANE*....Nikola Tesla(a man who shaped our world of electricity with his futuristic inventions)

It's Rosie and that's a great video with cameos by Mickey Mantle and John Madden.

    Rosie! I thought so.

    Oh what a great list!
    Across 110th Street is great,
Angel of Harlem is great but it doesn't make me think of the city sound it just makes me think of Bono

'when you get stuck btwn the moon and NYC,' that's a great song...

OMG I remember Boy from NYC! It's not about NY but that Bad Leroy Brown song was out at the same time

I beg to differ that Hey There Delilah is about NYC, it just contains a lyric about it. It's about the girl, Delilah!

She just happens to be here!

Oh and that New York song by Ja Rule is a good one and "We Run New York" by 50 Cent. Definitely. Jennifer Lopez's songs I hate to admit but they make me think of NY.

Billy Joel makes me think of NEw York too b/c he's from Long Island. Like 'Scenes from an Italian Restaurant'

Oh yes! Run DMC! Wait did you say 'ill'? Hee hee!! :) Ok I'll get down with that.
I prefer Angel of Harlem over City of Blinding Lights.

No Sleep Till Brooklyn is my favorite Beastie Boys. When I was in French class in middle school we did a performance for some school thing of 'You Gotta Fight" in French! Our French teacher was pretty cool, she translated it for us.

Intergalactic is good too though, and of course, Sabotage.
