i'm a guy and i'm growing my hair. A few questions! Do women prefer long hair? I'm becoming part of a minority group. How much abuse should i expect to receive?..i guess lots since i'm not protected by any discrimination laws!

You'll get lots. People just think there's something wrong :D
I've grown mine a bit, after shaving my head pretty much, for the last 13 years. And people just think there's something wrong with me I'm sure..so be prepared, just smile at it. People aren't comfortable with the unconventional :D
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....
  • That's weird. I was just thinking I've always wondered about dreds, and I found this thread.

Trouble is you've got the embarrassing stage where it's not in dreds, it's just long and stuff. And I reckon I'd look stupid with long hair.

I have long hair, about 3-4 inches below my shoulders. I receive little abuse, apart from chavs, except from my father, whom I ignore :) I think you'll find that not as many women prefer it as you'd like to think. Don't let that stop you though. You don't want one who is shallow enough that hair length would bother them anyway :p

Mine's getting pretty long. It has to get to at least 10 inches long in order to donate it to 'Locks of Love'. It's getting there.. in fact, I thinlk it's already there. I can't wait to get it chopped off... the fucking shit is driving me crazy.

When I was at home I got muchos abuse when I had long hair. Kids would try and pull it, people would shout at me asking if I wanted a sex change etc. etc. It was quite amazing how un-tolerant people were. Heck, I had abuse at me for my 'long hair' if it was any longer than a buzzcut. But when I moved to Manchester it was much different. I guess being in a city there's a bit of every kind of person around so everyone's much more tolerant.

So guess it depends really. I found people were more accepting of long hair if it looks styled and in some kind of hair cut. Otherwise you'll end up looking like a grunge knockback who's scared of the barbers.

  • Fuck it, if you can still grow it (i.e., no receding hairline or male pattern baldness) DO IT!!! I wish my hair didn't recede in my early 20's or I'd still have it long... Shaved mine off at 25, been bald for the last 14 years.. Didn't wanna be one of "those" dudes, with nothing on top and some scraggly shit growing out the back and sides.. Fuck that.. All or nothing..

I'd actually love to have dreds, just chicken about the in between stage and getting laughed at.

Me at 24, winter of '93, up in the Big Bear mountains.. Got the shirt at the Indio show in November of '93... Notice the "fivehead"... Few months later I shaved it all off, never to be seen again... Miss the hair.. And the shirt too..

So, yet again, the moral of the story is.. If you can grow it, do it.. Fuck what everyone else thinks..

I have fairly long hair right now and I always get compliments on it. The thing is you can't let it get too long or it just looks like you're a dirty metal guitarist or something.

Funny about the 'long and stuff'. :D Cause you're like soooooo with it... or something...

I always imagined you with long hair before I saw your picture!

To the OP, do what you want. My personal preference is short but I kinda like guys with long hair because I feel we might have similar music tastes. (I'm shallow). :D
  • I like longish hair on guys. Not really into the short look. But I don't really like super long hair on guys. To the shoulder is usually long enough. :)

I grew mine out a little over a year. Go for it. You will get some in between stages that are just awful, but just tough it out. My hair was at my shoulders about. You'll get a little abuse, but not too much.

Funny this thread popped up, I just got it cut today.

I'm a girl too, and i love men with long hair. Doesn't matter how long. I don't mind facial hair either, as long as it's not a proper beard.

but i hate chest hair, back hair.

shut up! guys are never too old to pull it off, and you're only in your 30's, and i wouldn't call you old! i've seen plenty of metal guys with long hair who are past your age and they still look great. :)

hehe, i had to go back to this thread to say this:

yep, i like long-haired guys and i do like how metal guys look, but from what i've heard my ex tell me recently is that they are bunch of guys with mental problems, which is funny cuz he himself has got a problem and he is a metalhead :D from another dude i heard that they're too fucked up ( drunk ) to have a proper convo. and to me they are just sexy looking jerks :D

I have long hair. When I was 15 girls loved it. Now I'm twenty and nobody cares.

Long hair on some men is VERY attractive - I'm thinking Brad Pitt in Interview with the Vampire....

However - if your starting to loose it, shave it off - there's nother less attractive than a guy with receding hair on top and long at the sides/back (now I'm thinking of Michael Bolton in the 90's). I think men look less bald when they keep their remaining hair really short - just my 2 penneth.....so if you got it - grow it!

If you have good hair (and not straggly bits), grow it! I LOVE long hair. Nothing like running your fingers through luscious long hair. MMMMMMMmmmmmmmm :D

Funny you say you are a minority.... I see so many men with long hair, all walks of life too, from hippie, to metal guy to accountant (but in a ponytail for work!).

Too quickly you will start losing it, so take advantage of long hair while you can!
