    Well it could just be a business move at this point.

    In late 1988, Pat Riley's corporation submitted a trademark request for the term "Threepeat." The Lakers didn't win thier third title, but Riley's corporation still holds the trademark.

    So when the Bulls threepeated twice in the 90's and the Yankees did as well, Riley made money off of their use of his trademark.
