Im just wondering what the best way is to store my vinyl, at the minute i just have it in my spare bedroom on a desk no doubt all getting out of shape!

What is the best way to keep it in good nick, just in a regular record case/box or is there a better way i can store them? I know there's a lot of love for vinyl on this board so thought i would ask the experts ;):)

Thanks

I have some old ones in an orange crate probably not the best, which is why I keep my favorite and most valuable on top of the record player.

    Doubtfully good advice though.

So, do you just have them stacked on top of one another? Does that make them lose their shape after a while or are they still sound? I have no clue what to do for the best as im new to this vinyl thing!! :D

well the ones that are in the orange crate are sitting like books on a shelf you know? leaned up against eachother. for years theyve been this way and they sound just fine. Im still paranoid that it will ruin my favorite ones, so the ones they are just stacked on one another on top of the turn table. As far as I know they still sound good, I havent played them for a couple months, but I think (and hope) that they are fine that way. Especially since I have my Jimi Hendrix record in that stack :D

I still have about 400 records. I guess the thing that is most important is to store them standing upright. I believe storing them upright prevents them from warping. I have seen records stacked laying on top of each other, and they do warp that way. Also, I make sure the are not subjected to drastically changing temperatures, which will also cause them to warp. If I wanted to be really anal, I would wrap each one in a plastic case, like comic books. That is how the vintage record stores in our area store their vinyl.

Extract taken from above site -

Our LP RECORD STORAGE BOXES are designed to properly hold 12" vinyl records in their jackets. ****Records should always be stored vertically with like sizes (i.e. don't stack records one on top of another, or with smaller records interwoven between them). ****

Uh oh best go and move those 7" out the pile quick sharp!

most of my albums were stacked on top of one another in a closet and made it through a house fire..though quite a bit of smoke damage to the outside covers amazingly they still play.

btw..i do not recommend storing by stacking on top of one another..in my case i had just moved to the house without fully unpacking...~

Do not stack your records. Make sure you store them upright in a cool, dry place.

Bonus points if you can tell me what group, and who was the singer on "Cool Dry Place."

Traveling Wilburys. And you're right about storing vinyl upright in a cool, dry place. I'm one of those old people who has lots of vinyl albums, and that's how we stored them. Also, don't let them lean -- try to keep them as upright as possible.
