Broke my collarbone tonight

I went to the hospital and they told me "we don't do anything for broken collarbones." I could've stayed for 8 hours to get an xray to confirm it is broken, but I know it is. I have T3s at home so I took a couple of those. Does anybody with experience have any advice for me to minimize the pain and maybe get some sleep tonight?

I've broken mine twice. There's not much do to. I hated going to the doctor for it, since all you get is a sling and some Vicodin. For Sleeping, I slept in a recliner chair or a soft couch. Basically you'll be sleeping but you won't want to lay down(depending on how bad it is) for about a week.

As far as the pain, just keep pillin' and puff a bowl. Good luck man.

Growing up my brother broke his 3 different times. All I really remember is he took a lot of pain pills and slept sitting up or slightly reclined.

Hope you heal quickly. Keep poppin' the pills and maybe some herbal remedy will help too.

I ran a route at football practice and got my feet tangled up with the guy covering me. I fell on my shoulder trying to make the catch and immediately felt the crunch and felt the broken bone.

At least you didn't think you dislocate your shoulder and then try to pop it back in. That's what I did the first time, ouchy :(

  • Broke my collarbone back in December, motorcycle accident. Try not to sleep lying down if you can help it. Getting up is a bitch. Also, try not to have your girlfriend break up with you right after. That's a bitch, too. Hang in there. It gets much better after a few weeks. 3 weeks and you will be mobile again. Good luck, and my sympathies.

My son came of his skateboard and snapped his collarbone, as well as taking a piece of bone out of his shoulder. It's true they can't do much for it. All you can do is immobilize it as much as possible, with your hand strapped up as close to the opposite shoulder as you can. Like, your arm across your chest with your hand resting on the unbroken collarbone. That ensures the neatest knit of the bone, but they are never the same, there's always a slight lump in the bone after........ mostly because it's impossible to immobilize it completely. Get some strong pain killers into you, and try to sleep on your back. You're in for a few uncomfortable days, but they do seem to heal quickly.

There really is nothing they can do. I've broke mine twice and I was given the same both times, an x-ray and pain killers. The second time I broke it I had muscle damage and they didn't want to risk a frozen shoulder (was already having pysio on my other shoulder!) so I didn't even get a sling.
I recommend sleeping sat up with lots of support from cushions and pillows or as others have suggested, in a reclining chair. Take painkillers before bed and try not to move too much.
Good luck dude, got sympathy for you :(

Hubby and son both broke theirs riding motocross. The first Drs they went to in the hospitals told them the same thing...we don't do anything with collar bones. Both race motocross, so they went for second opinions. The Orthopedist's for both recommended surgery. My son has a plate with 7 screws covering his because the overlap of the bones was over 1 inch, because of how the break was...his posture would have been really messed up for life...so it was a good decision to do the surgery, the plate comes out in December. Hubby separated his off of the sternum and had it sewed back in by an adventurous doctor at the hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. His would have been free floating for the rest of his life....it was sticking out just under the skin. They have new neck braces on order that cover the collar bone....hopefully protect it better!

Can't help you with pain advice....none of my crew take pain killers after the first night or two, they are all afraid of getting addicted, and find they really don't work....they do use lots of ice and ibuprofen and sleep sitting up for months.

I've a story about how good stuff can come out of broken collarbone situations :)

I know a guy who broke his collarbone playing football and was off work a couple of weeks... he started feeling sorry for himself and his sister was going to Oslo for a PJ meet up so she asked him if he wanted to come along. He did and he met me which, according to him, is the best thing that ever happened to him :)
