how long is Bay signed for?

He's signed for next season at 7.5 mil and then can become a free agent. The Sox will probably lock him up long term this offseason though.

Craig Hansen has been a bust. That's what you get for drafting a pitcher who went to St. John's U. ;)

And Brandon Moss is a corner OF/1B. Where's he going to play when you have Drew, Bay, Papi, and Youk manning the corner OF, DH and 1B spots?

Plus the Sox have Chris Carter in AAA that they got for Wily Mo last year who's better.

Oh and for those of you who don't know who Jason Bay is:

    Manny Ramirez: Avg .299 HR 20 RBI 68 Runs 66 SB 1

    Jason Bay: Avg .282 HR 22 RBI 64 Runs 72 SB 7

plus he's six years younger and less injury prone than Manny has been lately.

Instead of "injury prone" you should have put "fakes injuries and quits like a bitch".
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.

Hopefully you guys don't have a large outfield in Dodger Stadium. ;)

I have never heard a load of crap as in that statement right there. There is have been some odd plays for sure. Very ackward plays indeed but there has been some great plays and his arm is incredible. Look at his unassisted outs at home. World Series MVP. He knows how to play that wall as well as hit balls over it. It is a sad day in Red Sox Nation.

I am even more upset that Manny is gone than when it was Nomar. And I did not think there could had been a sadder day than that. Future Hall of Famer, I can only hope he can see that he needs to go in as a Red Sox. I hope he knows that we loved him and the last 2-3 months does not take away 6+years.
    Let's Go Red Sox!

I don't understand how you can love a guy who gets paid $20M per year, but for some fucked up reason quits on his team. There's nothing worse. People making $20K per year put up with crap every day but don't just quit when things aren't going their way.

he will be exposed in LA. He throws people out because he plays 25 feet behind SS.

    Let the smear campaign begin.

When he was hitting 40 HR's a year and driving in 150, it was just "Manny Being Manny." Now all we will hear about is how bad of a teammate he was, didn't run out ground balls, etc, etc. He's been this way all 8 years.

Happened with Nomar, Pedro, Lowe. All trashed on their way out. Classy organization.

I hate to say it, but I have to agree. Maybe not for 2008, but definately for the long haul. Bay moves to a better hitters park with a better lineup. I'm still a little wary of him, only because he was one of several hacks that fucked my fantasy team up last year. But he seems to be over whateverr killed him in 2007

it's kind of funny to me that the Sox got Bay and the Yankees got Nady.

Maybe Toronto or Baltimore will go after McClouth.

I can't believe Pittsburgh fields a team. That's an embarrassing organization. Nice farm system for the AL East though.

what do you want them to do? use the $70 million they collect form revenue sharing and the TV deals (Welfare for billionaires)on players? That would put a serious dent in profits.

You think? Anytime you lose a Manny Ramirez, your stock has to drop a little IMO.. Bay is nice , but hes no Manny

I like this deal for the Sox. My one concern on Bay is the post season experience. I think he'll put up Manny type numbers in Boston. Bay's long been regarded as a great hitter stuck on a bad team.

The Sox give away underachieving Craig Hansen who didn't fit into their long term plans, pick up similar offensive numbers and get rid of the Manny headache and save approximately 13 Mill for next (20 Mill Manny - 7 Mill Bay). This is also a good evaluation time for Bay for the Sox because if he doesn't pan out they have 17-20 Mill ready to sign the best free agent (Holliday).

The only drawback is losing the postseason experience of Manny (which is huge) and eating part of that contract. But if Bay flourishes this turns out to be a coup for the Sox IMO.
