Got to question the decisions made by Mr. No-confetti Coletti.

I heard on Rob Neyer's chat on espn that they are going to have the cover the 7 mil left on his salary.

Ok, here's my conspiracy thoery regarding this whole thing. You tell me whether I should get a tin foil hat:

Manny fired his agent a few months ago, and hired Boras. If manny's 2 options are picked up, his fired agent still gets paid for agreeing to that contract. Boras wouldn't see a dime until before the 2011 season, at which point manny woudl be 38, and looking at a 2-3 year deal at best. Boras tells him to do what you have to do to ensure that Boston has had enough of you, and they don't pick up your options. Manny only agreed to be traded if whatever team acquired him agreed to decline their team options for 2009 and 2010

The Red Sox will pay the remainder of his contract. But, the Dodgers had to agree to not pick up his option for next season.

Probably the reason they only had to give up 4 minor leaguers for him.
  • I loved Manny ever since he started with the Indians, however anyone who can't see that this makes Boston better is insane.

Bay will flourish in that lineup and is a great fielder who won't be a disruption in the clubhouse.

It sucks to see him go, but Boston got a great deal and won't risk not getting anything for him if they weren't going to pick up his option, AND they save $20 million (EDIT: I realize that they will pay some, but you get the idea)

    I'm thrilled about this trade.
    Manny had to go.

  • Oh and for those of you who don't know who Jason Bay is:

    Manny Ramirez: Avg .299 HR 20 RBI 68 Runs 66 SB 1

    Jason Bay: Avg .282 HR 22 RBI 64 Runs 72 SB 7

plus he's six years younger and less injury prone than Manny has been lately.

BIG Dodger fan here. Any Red Sox fan who thinks that this makes Boston better is delusional. As disgruntled as Manny was with Boston's managment, he and Big Papi were the heart and soul of that line-up. I'm not saying that this move makes the Dodgers better or worse but it certainly makes the Red Sox worse. Yanks or TB are gonna win the AL east now.

I hope to god that the new Dodgers outfield is Manny, Kemp and Ethier. Jones needs to get lost.

I GUARANTEE you that the Sox' winning percentage the rest of this season is better than it is up to this point.

I gaurentee that Joe Torre had something to do with this deal after how bad Andruw Jones shit the bed for him this season. Now the Dodgers can cut bait with his sorry ass bat in the middle of that lineup in LA.....I do have 1 question:

I don't think Bay is an upgrade from Manny when Manny is playing with some focus.

    BUT

The way Manny tanked 2006, and the past week or two, if that kept up, he was not going to be the player we expect.

That plus the fact that this story/cancer is history is a huge boost to the team.

Overall we lost a bit, but it was the only thing we could do.

I think we will be fine into the playoffs.

    From Keith Law ESPN:

    For the Red Sox

The Red Sox get slightly worse for this year, but suddenly look much better for next year. Jason Bay is a definite short-term offensive downgrade from Manny Ramirez, and while he has power and plate discipline, he's been doing it against inferior pitching in the National League and is a small step down from full-strength, not-mailing-it-in Manny at the plate. He's a better defender, since Manny has consistently rated among the worst left fielders in baseball, and Bay is less likely to have a Jason-being-Jason day off or to fail to run out a key ground ball.

But where Bay really improves the Red Sox is for 2009. Boston was almost certain to decline Ramirez' $20 million option for 2009, leaving them with an offensive hole to fill for next year. Bay is under control for next year, so the hole is already filled, and he's signed for an amazingly cheap $7.5 million. Even considering the $7 million the Red Sox sent LA to pay Manny's freight for this year (with the Dodgers telling teams they could not add any payroll for 2008), the Red Sox are getting a $15-20 million bat in Bay without the headaches that Ramirez had caused lately, and managed to do it without depleting their strong farm system or committing to a four- or five-year deal they'd regret by the middle of the second year.
