Im writing a paper on Why I think Prohibition of Marijuana is a down right stupid. I want to show statistics of deaths caused by alcohol and I was wondering if anyone knows a website that has these stats? Any help would be awesome. Thank you.

take it for what it is their data is from 2000-2005 broken down by year and state...

  • Don't use alcohol as the scapegoat. Point out the positive qualities and effects marijuana has, and how it could better society or people. Try to avoid glorifying it because something else can be worse.

MAJOR LOGIC PROBLEM pointing out that alcohol may be worse, totally irrelevant.
    Music is not a competetion.
  • As others have said...if the paper is about why marijuana should be legal, then you need to support that argument, rather than injecting an anti-alcohol argument into it.

  • I don't see any reason not to include the long-term and short-term effects of Alcohol and Tobacco. Of course, as in life and your paper, they should be both taken in moderation, don't turn it into an anti-alcohol/tobacco paper, but a mention of them being legal and having arguably much worse effects on the body isn't a bad idea.

The alcohol argument is relevant because it highlights that marijuana is illegal for reasons other than its supposed dangers to health. No government could fail to see that if they are banning substances based on the negative effects on society's health, alcohol and tobacco would be top of the list. Using the alcohol argument doesn't necessarily show why marijuana should be legal but it throws a whole lot of suspicion on the reasons for it's ban.

  • I'd imagine cdc.gov would have stats on this.

That's just arguing that since alcohol and tobacco are legal and could have worse effects, that pot should be legal. That's a poorly structured argument and not the focus of the paper. It is about why Prohibition of marijuana is ridiculous, so he should focus on marijuana; not, "it could be better for you than these legal products, so it should be legal". If he uses the alcohol is worse argument, then his topic should be making alcohol illegal.

Thats what I plan on doing. I am pointing out all the positives of Miss Mary but I need other things as well. I dont really see how its irrelevant as some of you say. Alcohol is more dangerous for you then Marijuana but its legal. How is that not relative to my argument? Im not saying my entire paper is going to be anti alcohol because I agree with the right to drink and in moderation alcohol isn't bad. Same with pot. Pot can be a bad thing if its used to much. But like alcohol Marijuana is good in moderation.

Because your argument is that Prohibition of marijuana is ridiculous, not alcohol is more dangerous. Therefore you should focus on: the reasons why marijuana is illegal (but shouldn't be), what benefits come from marijuana, etc. It should be about marijuana. Alcohol doesn't have anything to do with marijuana being illegal. Comparing the two (or showing alcohol to be worse) isn't really what you're trying to prove or say with that argument. I'm not saying you can't use any information about alcohol, but you need to stay on point!

Is it stupid that alcohol is legal but marijuana is illegal? Yes, but they are completely different substances, with completely different histories.
  • also cant fairly compare alcohol/tobacco and weed cause of sheer numbers. whos to say that if it is made legal that idiots wont be driving stoned and also causing accidents or that people wont be smoking weed before and after then enter every building which may also cause lung cancer and affects from second hand smoke.
look at how they are hammering smokers being in public and you cant even get a buzz from others smokers. while i dont think weed will cause as much domestic abuse as alcohol, people have proven irresponsible and inconsiderate with alcohol and tobacco. its bad enough i cant eat at certain places with out smelling like smoke afterwards or having to avoid certain streets at certain times when walking cause some idiot may come staggering out and looking for a fight.

good luck with your paper but i think human stupidity trumps any positive that you may point out. unless it is made illegal to leave private property while under the effects of weed. then i dont think there is much arguement to why it cant be legal.

plus the government doesnt need another source of income to build bombs.
  • I will definately try to find time to help you with this later. I love doing papers like this. First off I'm thinking about the whole drug war picture. Legalizing marijuana would have do so much for the drug war and also in terms of terrorism and border issues since IT GROWS EVERYWHERE and we wouldn't be importing it anymore.

I completed coursework to be a chemical dependency counselor. This was many many years ago, like 1995. What I learned is that restriction of a drug may be more associated with xenophobia than chemical reaction. For instance, it would be interesting to find WHEN marijuana first became illegal, and where, and if there was an particular immigrant population surging into that area.
