After 12 years I stopped smoking weed 2 days ago. Im trying to get a job as a cop and I want to pass the drug test without using a system cleaner. Its so crazy, I always hated cops and authority and now im trying to become one. I guess its what you call growing up.? I dont think its a bad thing to smoke weed and its sure gonna bother me busting people for weed when almost half my life I have done the same thing. Im doing it for the money and nothing more, but maybe i'll come to really like it??? If anything it will be a good experience. Also as a cop you get discounts and free food and drinks. (dont forget about the donuts) LOL this is gonna be a wild ride. Does anyone else have a job that they never thought in a million years they would never do? I was taking the garbage out 3 months ago and I saw a guy I went to school with and he was throwing my garbage in his garbage truck and he looked very happy doing what he was doing. I bet when he was in high school he never thought he would be a garbageman.

So you would bust pot smokers? You see some guy smoking..doing no harm, not hurting anyone...But you would take him to jail and maybe ruin his life so you can get paid?

Not in every case. If I saw someone smoking a joint, no. If someone had large amount then I would do what I had to do....and maybe pocket some of it if it was the good stuff. ;-)

So, you're becoming a cop just for the money? There's a lot of other jobs out there that have decent pay. And remember, the flipside of having such a good paycheck is the fact that you will have people shooting at you.

Good luck with it. We need people like you to do these things. There are to many guys who are cops that used to get picked on in school so they are getting revenge by being a dick officer. A few friends of mine are cops, great benifits.
Just stay away from the parking lot at concerts :)

I got picked on in school but I wouldnt get revenge on them, I dont even remember those guys. Im not a dick and could never be turned into a dick, I would be the coolest cop. I guess I need to grow a mustach?

Becoming a police officer has nothing to do with growing up.

Maturity doesn't have anything to do with being on the wrong or right side of the law. It has to do with self-knowledge and emotional balance.
  • Good for you man, at some point I got to get my shit together and start looking towards my future as well. Not now though. Good luck.

Your subject wording put the song title in my head...

    youtubed it and voila!

btw-- kinda shitty that you won't really 'believe' in the pledge you will be taking IF you make it. -- I understand that it's probably very naive of me to assume everyone really wants to be a cop to 'protect and serve'.. not just for the pension.

    oh well.......

    still a great song. :)
  • Dude, please dont become a cop just "to make some money", not in Memphis at least. Honestly, that is a life changing job. I was born in raised in Memphis and knew several cops/ex-cops. It isnt just a job. I can promise you it wont be a "good experience". I am too tired to sit and type it all out......but please really think about this decision long and hard (if you havent already) before you throw yourself into it. If you really just feel the need to "protect and serve" I commend you, God knows Memphis needs more police, but really think about it before you become an officer in the most violent city in the USA.

I am not trying to be heavy handed and I hope I dont come off like I think you are stupid, I dont. It is just that in your post you sound like you havent considered what you would be getting into.

Holler if you have any questions or anything.....and good luck to you either way.

I have been here all my life, 28 years. Well now I live in Arlington,TN\, I also lived in Collierville for 16 years, but I hate this shithole city. I have thought about what I would be getting myself into and im ok with it. I have never liked any job I have had but one. If I make it in and im sure I will, they want to hire 500 cops by the end of 2009 and im sure I will make it. Maybe I after a while I will grow to like it, but I think most jobs are about $$$ first. Its cool to talk to someone that knows about this city.

Well, like I said, I commend you. You are a brave dude to want that job.

I lived in East Memphis and Midtown for all my life except for college. I just moved up to Massacusetts so my wife can attend UMass for grad school. I love Memphis and miss it alot, so it breaks my heart to see what has happened to it and where it is headed. It wasn't so bad when we were kids. It is in desperate need for strong and unifying leadership. When Herenton got re-elected I just couldnt believe it. He only serves his own interests and further widens the racial gap, which to me is the main reason the city is in the toilet bowl spiral it is in. I could go on and on, long story short....I love my city, but I don't pretend it is a great place to live.

Again, good luck to you. It is nice to talk to a fellow Memphian.

i wish you luck; however, this is a pretty sad.
you're becoming a cop for the money, yes?
that is one terrible plan to my notion.
busting petty pot smokers and other things of insignificance might make you feel like you're doing the right thing when in fact you know you are not.
    outstanding work, dude.
if you are in a bigger city i have a bit of information for you.
wow, you are on my friend.
i suspect you will get a reality check here before to long.

    good luck and stay safe.
