    i would recommend this camera:

seriously. it's not the best looking camera but read the reviews...not just from amazon but sites like cnet and others. don't go buy the 'editors' rating either. read the customer reviews. afterall, they are the ones consistently using them.

people that i know that have the camera are very happy with the pictures and they do look good (the pictures, not the people)

for some reason we went with a Nikon when the Canon Powershot was on sale for $99!!! i mean, we are happy with the picture quality but spent more mnoney

I would look for a camera with much higher optical zoom.. 3x is just not worthy. Most optical zoom one can get for their dollar is the best deal.. but only if it has image stabilization (IS). At full zoom, a persons natural shake causes more blur.. IS helps to reduce or eliminate that. Cameras with good zoom and IS are very cheap these days. I agree with one person who said forget the protection plan.. unless of course, you are a total clutz and know you'll bang the camera into dysfunction w/in months.

    Peace

I'd recommend this camera also. I have a different model, but my mom has this one and I've used it many times. It's very good for the price.

I'd also look at the Fujis as well.
I bought a Fuji FinePix S1000FD and it is pretty good and easy to use.

And as brainofPJ mentioned, learning to manipulate the shutter speed is handy.

I TOTALLY preferred my A610 to the A590 I attempted to replace it with!

    Yeah...Shutter speed ...blah blah....

Everything ran more smoothly with the A610 though. :(

    I returned the 590.

Back to my 610... even though it's a little broken. (mosh pits will do that to a camera. ;) )
plus it has the flip out/down screen which comes in handy when in a crowd and want to hold your camera over your head and still frame a picture (ex: The Gorge). Love this camera. A little bulky for a pocket, but Ive always made due.

have a Panasonic Lumix and I love it... nice 6x zoom, small compact camera and great picture quality. Also has stabilizer mode and many different preset picture modes and pretty sure it will fit into your price range.

Most come with the necessities but I would suggest a camera which takes batteries so that if they run out you can replace them, and also buy an extra memory card. Lastly, listen to South, higher megapixels are good but only if you are going to enlarge and print photos larger than 8x10... anything smaller than that and most cameras have enough megapixels.

Yep, gotta love the 12x optical zoom on the Fugeez...I still have my old 3MPx FinePix and use it often for landscape pics and what not.
  • buy a Canon. I have owned Canons forever, and they take fantastic pictures. I owned a Kodak once...when i first got into the digital world, and it just never compared, so went back to another Canon, and love it. I have a Canon Pwershor A610. It has recently been replaced with other models, but have a look at that line. you won't be disappointed

Agree. I have a Canon, my brother has one, as does my father. All good cameras.

Mine is only a 4 Megapixel A80, but the swivel screen to me is the most is EXCELLENT feature on any camera for taking really obscure angle shots...such as low to the ground looking up, and taking pictures while holding the camera at chest level... brilliant.

Go Canon...get the swivel view screen.

Sounds good... I skipped the protection plan, and would suggest if the camera takes batteries, spend $15 and get a set of rechargeables with a charger. I also got a 2 gig memory card, so I don't ever have to worry about not having space for pics while on a trip.
