What technology did you have early and late?

What technology did you get when it first came out and what did you get very late? Did you ever get something that completely failed fairly quickly?

Early.......Cable internet, Nintendo, MP3 Player

Late.......PS2, Cellphone, (I still dont have a flat screen television), CD Player, DVD Player

I had Sega 32X and Dreamcast just before they got cancelled. I listened to tapes for way too long when I was a kid and wish I would have invested in a CD Player earlier because tapes sounded like such shit. I didnt really start collecting videos until VHS was about to die, I still have way more DVDs though.

I never get anything early... if you wait it out, you get better technology (more features) at a way lower price.
The first CD players cost about $1,200.00 in the mid 80s... and all it did was play one CD... non-programable. And not that long ago... flat screen (plasma) screens were well into the $20,000.00 range... and they are all probably dead by now. Digital cameras, iPods, you name it.

my family got one of the very first vcrs.....circa 1977ish....it was the size of buick and cost the same but no one else had one yet....we also had cable at it's infancy :)

late? well i didn't get an ipod until it's 3 generation....and i don't have hd or a plasma....partly because of cost and partly because it isn't that big of a deal to me :)

Yeah, but if you wait too long you also miss out on cool shit. Then the next thing you know you've dead. LOL

If there was a scale 1(buy shit early) - 10(wait till it's old and out of date because I'm a cheap-ass).
    I'd say I'm probably a 3-4
  • I'm always early in terms of technology. It's kind of related to my job, but I always am an early adopter. Some random examples

Archos 20 GB mp3 player in 2001 - Used 4 AA batteries. Was before the iPOD, and I still say easier (drag and drop your folders over like Windows Explorer..simple)
    Picture - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/6/62/Jukeboxrecorder2b.jpg/563px-Jukeboxrecorder2b.jpg

DVD player in 1998 when it was over $500. I remember even blockbuster didn't have DVD's to rent

Currently have blu-ray player, 1080p tv, Slingbox, etc.

Lately I've had a wait-and-see attitude (didn't get bluray till the HD-DVD war was over...didn't jump on iPhone bandwagon, etc).

  • I'm late on everything.....have been since I was a child....but then again I grew up poor, and now I'm just a cheapskate.

I still watch tapes sometimes as well, the library still only carries alot of movies and such on VHS. There are still tons of movies that are not on DVD believe it or not.

We had an IBM PC in the early 80's with dual floppy drives and paid $5,000. We also had a vhs player and recorder in the the late 70's. We were late on cell phones (didn't get ours until around 2003) and still don't have an ipod. It is on my list of things to get, but it probably won't be an ipod. :)

  • I would say I'm late on pretty much all technology. For the most part I just can't afford things when they first come out. I just got my ipod a couple of months ago, I don't have a flat screen tv yet and I don't see myself getting one for a while. I have no desire for a cellphone, probably wouldn't use it if I had it. I would say the only thing I got into fairly early was dvd. We got our first player in 1999, and thats when I started my collection (525 titles and still growing)
