Anybody got any good ideas of things we could do for it or gifts? With work and everything else, I havent had time to think of something brilliant to do. So far, I am planning on drawing a portrait of us as a gift. I need more ideas though so please help.

How does needing a new car figure into it? OK, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Marriage or car, marriage or car, marriage or car....

    tis a dilemma indeed :p

I totally agree. After five years you either know shes the one or she isn't. Those excuses of bills yadda yadda are lame. Life is always full of bills and stress and responsibility. If you are waiting for everything to be "perfect", it will never happen for you.

Unless of course she isn't the marrying type and would be offended by a proposal.

    Otherwise, DUDE!!!! Get the ring!!!

maybe hold it a little longer. But at 5 years you must have a patient woman and there's no rule you have to buy a diamond. And your cover for not buying the diamond is watching blood diamond (with her) a few weeks before and commenting how sad it is that the diamond industry is so corrupt :)

No rush for the ring. When it's right it's right and you'll know it.

Back to your original question - What are her interests? Is there anything that she really loves doing? My ex got me a spa package one year and I loved that - massage, pedicure, etc. This year my fiance got a special behind-the-scenes package at the zoo and that was awesome cause I love animals. It could be something you could do together, in addition to the keepsake - I love the idea of the portrait!
There's a light when my baby's in my arms :)

oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

christ people, hows about focusing on what he ASKED? i don't think he was looking for *judgements* on shit or get off the pot. hell, some people NEVEr marry, not their thing...so why make ANY assumptions about this guy and his girl? sheesh. never ceases to amaze me!

that said...i was going to suggest a romantic weekend away somewhere. however, if the budget is tight....what about a picnic? you prepare all the food, as simple or elaborate as you like.....wine or your fave beverage...and a beautiful location. if you two have a *special place*...even better. or, take her to where you went on your first date. something, anything...that shows you put some thought and preparation into it is ideal. the portrait sounds wonderful!

    enjoy! :)

The weekend getaway is a pretty good idea, the picnic is a really great idea too but I unfortunately live in Wisconsin so there will most likely be snow that day.

well i didn't know exactly how soon 'coming up' was....and yea, depending on where you live, a picnic say tmid-late april could be fantstic!

since that's out, perhaps you can find someplace quite reasonable? try priceline for hotel deals....maybe a place not too far.......just being alone togethr somewhere new, or revisiting a place you both love....romantic, romantic. ;)

Not to me, all snow does is bring down my mood. I would prefer to cuddle on a beach at night.

20p!!!! Where do you shop? Harrods??

Seriously, don't stress to much over it. You know your g/f and you know what she'd like. A portrait is a great idea. Very romantic. If you really don't know...ask her mum or best g/f.
