Dipsophobia... anyone else out there?

Hey so my girlfriends gone out for a few drinks tonight, which i'm totally cool with. But whenever drinking is involved with anyone I feel close to I get this horrible feeling of dread.

I checked online and apparently I'm dipsophobic, which means I have a fear of drinking (alcahol). I checked for forum support and some other helpful aids but it's all based out of the US (being in Australia thats not really helpful), and no one on any forum seems to be able to discuss it.

So I'm gonna go ahead and take the first step. If anyone else suffers from Dipsophobia I would love to hear from you, and how you manage with it?

Thanks

Andrew

Is there also a fear of not drinking because I might suffer from that...

I don't but if I did I would probably drink to try and cope with it.

  • So big deal... go tea total. It's hardly as serious as a fear of water.

What makes it any less serious? Isn't alcahol just as prominent in everyday culture as water?

No, it's not going to kill me, but it is still going to effect my quality of life. I'm fine with being a tea total, but i'm not fine with the destructive mindset i get into when people i love are drinking.

  • Anyone that knows me, knows I'm clearly not 'Dipsophobic' but I have heard of it before and like you said, it makes you worry as much about your friends and other people around you. It's not just about drinking yourself. :)

Well then I apologise. If it bears on your relationship with people and you fear for their safety etc., then yes it's serious. And I do understand how prominent alcohol is in our culture.

finding a doctor who specializes in anxiety disorders (or some sort of anxiety support organization) would be a good place to start. Talk to your family doctor and ask for a referral.

    or try exposure therapy....seriously...
