Our Disposable Society...

Paper plates, paper towels, single use napkins, disposable containers; why use a mop when you could use a Swiffer and throw out the disposable duster at the end?

Just once when people ask me for a bag for their things at the store, I'd like them to stop and think to themselves, "do I really need a bag? Can I manage to carry my [two dvds / postcards / roll of stamps / etc] without a bag?" My favourite is the dad who asks for a bag for his DVD so that his daughter can carry it in one, so she can "feel important and special".

I see it on TV and people I know, people who use paper plates at dinner because you can buy 15000 in a package for 14 dollars at Costco and then not worry about washing them after. I don't really understand why one can't use a cloth instead of a paper towel... I don't mean the odd time soaking up the puppy's pee or spilt coffee at the shop... but for everything?

People ease themselves into a mode of laziness or convenience and start to lose track of these little things and it REALLY frustrates me.

    Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel.
  • It's by and large a disposable world from a consumers perspective.

    running the treadmill of consumerism...work to spend to work...wake up...repeat.
    Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
    and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
    over specific principles, goals, and policies.

    I agree with you! I never take a bag...if its small enough to throw in my purse I do that...or I have a reusable one I carry with me. Swifer's suck, I still scrub the floor on my hands and knees with a scrub brush, I use a dish towel for messes, always use regular dishes and cups...if I DO use a plastic cup for parties and what not...I actually wash them after and reuse them for awhile(only use them for parties because of breaking). I do use paper napkins, having trouble getting away from that, sometimes my nose runs when I eat...and I like to have the paper napkin handy for that(gross I know).

    Hmmm... I am not going to feel bad for being frustrated with people who serve their dinners nightly on disposable plates, you can say i'm on a high horse if you want... It's the point more than anything.

    Whether or not you use disposable things from time to time (i think we all do) you still acknowledge what i'm trying to say :) I guess that makes you pretentious as well :rolleyes:

    And yes! I'm glad i'm not the only one who has a thing against Swiffer :)

    I don't do it to be pretentious:p though others may think differently! I hate plastic bags accumulating in my house...I feel that the swifer does shit!...dish towels soak up more liquids...and I hate cutting food on disposable plates. The washing of the plastic cups is cause I'm cheap:D

    exactly...and my point was it's not what you say, it's how you say it (or write it).

    its pretty hard to judge how someone "says something" through a bunch words typed and conveyed through a screen with no emotion whatsoever, its all about how you interpret it.
    {if (work != 0) {
    work = work + 1;
    sleep = sleep - work * 10;}
    else if (work >= 0) {
    reality.equals(false);
    work = work +1;
    }system("pause");
    return 0;}
  • The worst is when you walk down like a busy street in a shopping distract and people have like 9 different bags from Zara and H&M and American Eagle, its more about the status symbol, like "look at me I can afford clothes for rich people", why dont they just use the first large bag they get and put all their new items into the one bag?

    No because you don't make friends by only having one brand name.

    yeah i'm not entirely sure how i come off on a high horse by writing that the way i did.

    maybe i should make it a little less intelligent, simplified, and throw in some curse words.

    I always carry a bag with me. I use a mop for the floor, and use dishcloths that I can chuck into the washer to clean up with. I hate paper plates, and would never want to eat off one.

    Okay, so you use a cloth for almost everything... then you end up having to wash all of those cloths, which in turn uses more water and more detergent (which is damaging to the environment to make and to use).

    Hmm.... ;)
