i don't even know what Canada Post is classified as anymore... when some training lady came in to refresh our new bosses on the system she told us that its technically not government hence the tax on stamps...
but the point is, you'd think that they'd like to help out small business and communities? no.
i work at a retail outlet (which means there is a canada post counter within another business). you can often see this at Pharmasaves and Shoppers Drugmarts, but alternatively at other places like markets, malls, photo processing places etc. In my case I work at a hodge-podge of a video store, one of the things we offer is Canada post. It's basically a mom 'n pop shop where a family is trying to make ends meet between BOTH a Pharmasave and Shoppers Drugmart.
Now, there has been a lot of (annoying) development in my area - which used to be somewhere between a rural and suburban town, the type where you could see the mountains clearly and crisply on your drive home from Vancouver. Now it's being built up like there's no tomorrow. Before there were three main post offices in the area: ours, Pharmasave and another family run one in the next catchment spot. They built a Shoppers Drugmart about 2 years ago, with a 4th Canada Post in there. This took away from our business (partly because the customers who picked up their mail here are now being sent over there) and has crippled the other family run business, once booming with revenue, the owner has since had to lay off most of his employees and try and work it himself.
If that's not bad enough, Canada Post doesn't allow some outlets to sell certain things. In fact, there is a holiday Xpresspost envelope (which you can buy or recieve free as a gift if you buy a certain amount of other things). Apparently, my bosses had to keep asking if they could sell these. Canada Post finally let us have the holiday envelopes, but only to use as the gift with purchase option. We're not even allowed to make money off them! Last year they wouldn't let us have them at ALL, only the big places like Shopper's Drugmart and Pharmasave.
My boss' wife told me today this happens all the time.
So you tell me, how is that fair? They are trying to drive out all the small businesses run by honest, hardworking families... and give the business only to the large corporations. (For our American friends, Pharmasave / Shoppers Drugmart is the equivalent of Rite Aid etc)
Honestly, if this place were to go under, I could find another job easily. I'm just pissed off for my bosses, I see them trying to make their business work but they're just being suffocated by the burdons of large corporations like Blockbuster and Shoppers...
