So, if you don't wish your friend happy birthday...

and then they point out that you hadn't, is it then pointless to wish them it? or do you wish them it anyways, and look like you only did it because they said to... or do you just not say anything at this point and risk being... rude? or... not a good friend... or whatever i appear to be at the moment...

(and to be fair, i was at work all day today, logged on at my second job and briefly chatted with said friend for about 10 minutes between helping customers... it just slipped my mind because i was running around and tired!)

I hate when people do this to me... A lot of people look for too much attention when they do it.... A lot of other people find some sort of weird humor in making these remarks, and also try to make you look like a jackass for forgetting.

Wish them happy birthday anyway and explain the situation to them. Then they may feel like an ass.

As someone who gets more birthday wishes online from distant friends than those in real life (even from my closest friends) ...

I think a simple statement like, "Sorry, I was scatterbrained jumping back and forth between you and the customers, and I forgot to mention it," would suffice. If said friend doesn't accept it, there's not much else you can do. It's understandable why your pal is miffed for being forgotten, but I would accept the above statement and move on. I hope your friend does the same.
