Sunset Boulevard is called "The Strip" for a good reason: it's lined with clubs from The Viper Room to the House of Blues to Whisky A Go Go. Places where you can see a set of 5 miscellaneous bands (local and not) at very reasonable ticket prices (maybe not so reasonable at the HOB depending on who's playing there).

Other LA are places like The Hotel Cafe, The Troubadour, even Molly Malones are very good places.

Yahoo the MetroMix/Los Angeles site and research your good time.

    On Sunset:
    http://theroxyonsunset.com/
    http://www.whiskyagogo.com/
    http://www.viperroom.com/

    In West Hollywood: http://www.troubadour.com/

Those are a few smaller venues, you can check out their sites for their calendars. Sunset has clubs and bars as well and I know you didn't mention it, but comedy clubs also, a Hustler store, crack whores, I mean you can have a whirl of a time walking up and down sunset. The clubs, it's hard to make a list without knowing what kind you want? Like a typical nightclub with dj's playing hip-hop and dance music? A dive bar with a stage with rock bands? Feeling like waiting in line at an A-list club and seeing if you can get in? Dress up? Casual? It all depends what your flavor is. This site could help too, they have a search function that's someone useful to breakdown areas: http://www.la.com/nightlife

Sure they did...so many have hit the Troubadour stage; in their formative years and in their rock star years.

Back in March I was there for a show that consisted of Tom Morello, Slash, Steve Vai, Perry Farrell, Wayne Kramer,Cypress Hill, Flea, Stewart Copeland and Travis Barker. It's a great venue. And it's West Hollywood.

Yes it is. That's where they were discovered and where it all started. A lot of history in that place. I always love going there. One of my favorite bands from northern california are starting to play there quite often these days and I love it. They used to play the Roxy a lot as well, but their last few shows were all booked at the troubadour instead now. It's a fun atmosphere in there. Very relaxed, casual, and personal.

I would stick to the off-strip clubs, such as the Troubadour, the Echo, and Spaceland.

The clubs on the sunset strip often charge bands to play there, so most any band can find a gig up there!

Those are always fun nights. I love it when a Nightwatchmen show is announced. The ones at the Troubadour are always great times.

Bar time means how late bars serve alcohol not sell it like a store does.

Did I ever say chump? No you did silly.

When you're in LA, the best thing to do is drive to San Diego and hang out in the Gaslamp district. Get a hotel room in San Diego so that you don't have to drive all the way back to LA late at night.
