My brother-in-law told me about this t-shirt that he saw that said "I wish my lawn was emo so it would cut itself."
Yup. That's all I have to add to this conversation.0

I've got to say that I'm impressed that you're more accepting of people being different than a 14 year-oldjosevolution wrote::eek: i said what why what do you mean ? what is an emo girl he says they wear black and they cut themselves because they are depressed hi's 14 i'm like wtf is that ,when i wen't to school i didn't see girls all depresed and crap maybe i was clueless ,but it sems that now there is some much presure on kids to have to fit in and all anyone have daughter/sons who are going thru shit like that ,i told him to lay off the hate word and to feel compassion instead ..... It's good that you're trying to teach him that. He has a pretty skewed view himself but no doubt just because, like you say, there's pressure for him to fit in and also to deride those who are different/ For the record, I've known a few "emo" girls (stupid term, it's got fuck all to do with emo, it's just wearing make-up and having silly hair and writing daft message on your myspace with hearts in them) and I've known a few girls that have self-harmed. They are not the same people. The emo girls are just trying to be non-conformist by conforming to another thing and they grow out of it. There's nothing wrong with it. The one's who hurt themselves don't do it to pretend to be different, they do it because they have problems and, like you told your son, certainly don't deserve to be hated. Your son is just, understandably, buying into the high school stereotypes of this kind of thing and it's really all bullshit. I'm sure he'll also grow out of it. I'll tell you something though, even though I was neither, I didn't really fit into the cool crowds nor was I considered a "loser" and wasn't an "emo kid", I much preferred to be around those who might have been considered that way, whether they were or not. It's the jock types and their attitudes that I found repulsive."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0

well emo girls hate themselves too
but all jokes aside i was at some thingy about the whole cutting thing and its kinda a trend. even normal girls do it cause their friends do. its kinda like drugs. it only takes like one of them to really want to do it and the rest just follow. there are like whole cheerleading squads and crap that do this, and those girls arent even emo. its just a cool thing to do.
girls cut themselves, boys shoot people. its all good.0

The new "emo" thing seems to glamorize (sp?) self-harm and suicide. Its a clique thing, and is pretty horrible. There are young people harming themselves, with parents/teachers blaming it on listening to shit like MCR and not worrying about WHY your son/daughter thinks its nice to cut themselves! There's loads of people who went through a phase of wearing black and wanting everyone to die, we didn't all want to cut ourselves - that has to be an underlying issue.
Its also good that you teach your son to be more tolerant to those not like him, thats cool Cos yung'uns not talkin because one thinks the other is psycho is not cool. Cos yung'uns not talkin because one thinks the other is psycho is not cool.
and for the record, those of us who didn't "grow out of it" are all quite stable people, be they metalheads/goth/cybergoth/hippies/anything else alternative! Your music sense doesn't determine your mental health!0

Oh don't get me wrong, when I said grow out of it I meant the sort of scenester "myspace posing" thing that people seem to label "emo" these days. That's not a way of expressing yourself as such, it's just a shallow trend and not one that I think the people involved in it will take seriously in years to come. I wasn't saying that people do, or should, grow out of alternative lifestyles. Some of my best friends are goths and punks and nothing pisses me off more in the world than when they get judged for it. I once had a big crush on one of my friends who one could probably describe as a goth, although she doesn't, and my mother used to be all like "why don't you find yourself a nice normal girl". Aside from the fact I liked this girl, she was one of my best friends and eventually I just had a massive go at my mother and told her I thought it was sickening that a social worker would be so judgmental about someone because they dress a little differently. You'd think she'd know better.Jennytree wrote:and for the record, those of us who didn't "grow out of it" are all quite stable people, be they metalheads/goth/cybergoth/hippies/anything else alternative! Emo people are pretty stupid and quite pathetic.
When I was in high school, there wasn't "Emo" then (at least I don't think) just kids that listened to goth and wore black all the time.
We called them the "Sad Kids".
I've seen a few of them on myspace now. Most are pretty clean cut, have families, kids, and are..."normal".
What kids will do to fit in...!0

Do you know what I find pretty stupid and pathetic? People who feel like their opinion on what is normal is correct. Why the hell should anyone tell anyone else how to dress or act?mca47 wrote:Emo people are pretty stupid and quite pathetic.

You know what I find sad, pathetic and not "normal"? The people that did this:

Yeah, that is a sad story.
The point of my post wasn't to slam anyone specific for expressing themselves in a particular way...rather to slam all people for falling into crowds and groups of people and to act a certain way in order to fit in.
I understand kids are very impressionable but looking back it all seems so irrelevant and sad and pathetic...which is why I included how all of those "crazy sad kids" as we called them all seem normal straight-laced folks. Asking them how ridiculous it was and I'm pretty sure they'd all agree...just like that little emo douche wearing black and a pink studded belt would in 10 years.0

I know but all I'm saying is, why shouldn't they be allowed to wear black and a pink studded belt and then look back in 10 years and laugh? They shouldn't have to be laughed at now just for dressing the way they want. I'm not a goth or anything personally, the closest I come to dressing and looking differently is that I wear t-shirts of bands that most people haven't heard of and I have long hair but even that causes some people to question me and it's stupid. I was never at all comfortable with the way I looked until I grew my hair long and now I am at least somewhat ok with the way I look. The idea that I shouldn't do that so that I don't make someone else wonder why I do it just seems bizarre to me. I don't go about telling anyone else what they should look like.mca47 wrote:Yeah, that is a sad story.

I'm not saying it's anything like the same and I'm not having a go at you but the mentality that causes people to designate another group of people as "crazy sad kids" is not far removed from the mentality that can, in extreme cases, lead to kicking the "crazy sad kids" to death in a park just because their hair is braided red and purple and they have piercings all over their face. It just makes me very, very sad."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0

You don't have to dress in black and wear make-up to change yourself to fit in. Acting like a jerk to those same kids to fit in with the so-called "normal" kids is even more sad and pathetic.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0

People should be able to wear whatever the hell they want...agreed. I like to look at the sociological aspect of how people act, who they associate with and the reason for their choices. It has very little to do with individuality in most cases, rather the social comfort and social selfishness of being with people that act, and dress the same way. It's seen throughout all of nature...just just in "human nature".
To me, I find most of these social choices to be silly given our level of intelligence but I guess we haven't evolved that far.
That said, if I walk down the street wearing pink pajamas wearing a cowboy hat and high heels I'd expect people to look, laugh and perhaps make fun of me.
Kids that adhere to a certain image...if out of the norm will be put in the spotlight. Is it right? Of course not, but people...and especially kids are fuckin' mean.0

Emo girls are like the modern goth...which is like the cure fans of the 80's...each generation gets crappier music, but kinda cooler clothes.
and speaking as a cure fan/goth-ie sort...lemme tell ya...you might want to convince him to look closer at us dark girls...
