  • I'd love to witch to gas, but Keyspan's line ends 4 blocks away. When I bought the house, I called them about a switch. They said it would cost well into the thousands to run a gas line to our house.

years ago my cousin heated their ranch with a wood burner......they would put fans around to pull the heat to the rooms that were difficult to get heat in.

our home was built a year ago and is real efficient i have thought about installing a wood burner also.....for loss of power reasons when ice storms hit. :)

  • We just put in a Carrier Weather Infinity Super Efficient furnace. Cost a fortune to buy, but it will seriously reduce our bills. We have a woodstove in the basement but it just doesn't cut it. By the time we get home from work, light a fire, it's midnight before the house is warm. But the basement is toasty LOL!

So we'll occasionally light a fire, mostly weekends. But are pumped about the furnace. Oil is out of control. Stupid forecasters. All speculation, I swear!

  • I have a gas furnace that runs the forced hot water base board heat - 2 zones for a 1300 sf colonial. I also have a gas drier, gas HW heater and gas grill.

From November through April, I'll pay about $225 per month on average. The other 6 months it's about $50 per month. So that's about $1,600 per year on average.
